Pandits yet to resume work in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 14: Over a month after the killing of Rahul Bhat, Kashmiri Pandit employees recruited under the Prime Minister's employment package have not resumed their duties in Kashmir. Rahul Bhat was shot dead at his office in Budgam on May 12. Bhat lived in a secure accommodation for Pandit employees. While the Jammu and Kashmir government announced various measures to ensure the safety of the Kashmiri Pandit employees, they are adamant to get relocated outside the Kashmir Valley. The Pandit employees have been protesting and constantly pressing for their relocation to Jammu. Beginning from Rahul, there have been a series of targeted killings and this has created fear among the Pandit employees and their families. Our demand is simple and that is relocation outside Kashmir, said a Kashmir Pandit employee at Budgam. According to the Jammu and Kashmir Relief and Rehabilitation department, 5,412 Kashmir Pandits are working in various districts of Kashmir under the PM package. No employee has resumed duties in the last one month and protests are continuing to seek relocation outside the Kashmir division, said Vikas Hangloo, a Pandit employee. The government's offer to include posting to district headquarters is insufficient. Many employees and their families have already left Kashmir after a spate of targeted killings. However, the government says that various measures are being taken so that Pandits resume their duties. Many of the security and service related issues have been addressed and I am sure they will return to their duties soon, Commissioner of the Relief and Rehabilitation A.K. Pandita said. He said half the Pandit employees of the PM package were in Jammu now. ? The rest are in Kashmir and they have not resumed duties." |
