Nothing special about DPAP, Azad’s loyalists drifting away | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 7: Former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is finding it hard to make inroads into the Union Territory. Azad after saying goodbye to the Congress Party had floated his own party, Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), following which many of his loyalists left Congress and joined him. But as soon as senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reached J&K along with his Bharat Jodo Yatra, leaders who had come to Azad returned to their parent party. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Leaders who had joined Azad were of the opinion that the former chief minister would be able to break the ice and he may become a political connection between New Delhi and J&K.” He said, “Even after the passing of many months, Azad has not been given any position and he is as good as any other politician in J&K. Ones who had come running to him with a hope that they may sniff power under his leadership have left him and are looking for greener pastures.” It's in place to mention here that during the past few months many DPAP leaders have called it quits and changed their loyalties. “Azad is finding it hard to keep his flock together even in his own native area i.e. Doda and Kishtwar districts. Whenever assembly elections are held in J&K the former chief minister may not find it easy to make an impact as he has not got many people to fall back upon,” said another analyst. He said, “Since the day Azad has formed his party he has addressed many rallies in J&K. He has even introduced his son as his heir but it seems that things are not working for his party.” “The politicians in J&K have become restless and want to return to the power corridors. In Azad they had seen a hope but that has also faded along with the passage of time. The DPAP is yet another addition in the list of regional parties active in J&K and there is nothing special about it,” the analyst added. Pertinently, on Tuesday many DPAP leaders from the Kahara area of Doda, Azad’s home turf, left the DPAP and rejoined the Congress party in the presence of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief, Vikar Rasool Wani. |
