Cong faces existential crisis
1/17/2025 10:00:26 PM
The Congress Party in Jammu and Kashmir is grappling with an existential crisis that threatens its relevance in the region’s shifting political landscape.
This crisis, marked by internal divisions, a lack of clear leadership, and dwindling grassroots support, comes at a time when the Union Territory’s political environment is in flux.
The resurgence of regional parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) growing footprint, and the dismal performance of the party in the recently held assembly elections in J&K have compounded the Congress’s woes.
At the heart of the Congress’s troubles in J&K is factionalism. Senior leaders are often at loggerheads, each vying for prominence rather than working collectively. This internal discord has created a perception of a party riddled with infighting, unable to present a united front to voters.
Factionalism has been exacerbated by recent developments. Leaders dissatisfied with the central leadership’s decisions have openly voiced their grievances, leading to a loss of confidence among party workers and supporters.
The exodus of prominent leaders to rival parties further highlights the party’s inability to retain talent and address grievances.
The Congress has traditionally relied on its grassroots network in J&K to mobilize support. However, this foundation has eroded over the years due to neglect and a disconnect between the leadership and the cadre. The party has failed to adapt to the aspirations of the youth and address pressing local issues, such as unemployment, infrastructure development, and access to basic amenities.
In the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370, the Congress’s response has been lukewarm and inconsistent, alienating both its traditional voter base and potential new supporters.
While its ally National Conference (NC) has positioned itself in a much better position than the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir.
The BJP’s aggressive push in J&K has also cornered the Congress. The saffron party has invested heavily in building its cadre and infrastructure in the region, appealing to nationalist sentiments and promising development. Simultaneously, regional parties continue to dominate the narrative leaving little space for the Congress to carve out a distinct position.
For the Congress to reclaim its relevance in J&K, it must undertake comprehensive reforms. A decisive leadership capable of bridging internal divides and re-energizing the grassroots is crucial. The party must also adopt a clear and consistent stand on issues that resonate with the people of J&K, such as economic development and youth empowerment.
