Zero tolerance, lasting peace

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 21: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Friday, reaffirmed the Narendra Modi government’s unwavering stance against terrorism, criticizing past administrations for their lenient approach.
Speaking during a Rajya Sabha debate on the functioning of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Shah highlighted transformative decisions under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, such as the revocation of Article 370, which he credited for ushering in enduring peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
Shah emphasized that since Article 370 was repealed, local collaboration with terrorists has ceased entirely, restoring stability across the region. He contrasted this with the UPA era, when the glorification of terrorists was commonplace, noting that such practices have vanished during the NDA’s ten-year tenure. He also cited a 70 percent drop in terror-related deaths, with incidents decreasing from 7,217 between 2004 and 2014 to 2,242 between 2014 and 2024.
Paying homage to fallen police personnel, Shah lauded their sacrifices, which he said have bolstered India’s security and positioned it as a key player on the global stage after over 76 years of effort. “My deepest gratitude goes to their families for their steadfast support,” he added.
Shah underscored how pre-Modi governments struggled with persistent challenges like terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Left Wing Extremism, and insurgencies in the Northeast, which stalled India’s progress. “Under PM Modi, we’ve eliminated these hurdles, paving the way for peace and development,” he asserted.

Under PM Modi, we embraced a zero-tolerance policy.
mmu and Kashmir’s past, Shah recalled frequent terrorist attacks on civilians, especially during festivals, met with silence from previous governments wary of political fallout. “Under Modi, we embraced a zero-tolerance policy,” he declared, citing the swift surgical strikes and airstrikes following the 2019 Pulwama attack as evidence of India’s bold new approach.
On Article 370, Shah praised the foresight of India’s constitution-makers for keeping it temporary, criticizing the opposition’s reluctance to act. “On August 5, 2019, PM Modi fearlessly revoked it, fully integrating Jammu and Kashmir with India, unhindered by vote-bank politics. There’s no separate flag or constitution anymore,” he said. He noted the extension of welfare laws, the establishment of an Anti-Corruption Bureau, and the recognition of Dogri, Hindi, and Urdu as state languages.
Shah highlighted tangible signs of progress: cinema halls reopening, peaceful celebrations of festivals like Diwali and Krishna Janmashtami, and the successful G20 summit in the region. “These were once unthinkable, but Jammu and Kashmir is now flourishing,” he said. He added that terrorist attacks have plummeted, with local terror networks dismantled through decisive action.
Economically, Shah pointed to over 40,000 government jobs and 1.51 lakh self-employment opportunities created between 2019 and 2024, alongside skilling initiatives. “An attractive industrial policy has brought Rs 12,000 crore in investments, with MoUs worth Rs 1.1 lakh crore signed,” he said, signaling a bright future for the Union Territory.
