srinagar, May 14: After facing worst ever defeat in its 75-year history in the Parliamentary and Assembly elections last year, the National Conference is bracing itself for a major overhaul.
And it's none other than the aging president Dr Farooq Abdullah who has to taken upon himself to salvage the party.
Sources told Early Times that since the return of Farooq to Srinagar from London last month after undergoing kidney transplant, he has held more than ten back to back closed door meetings with the party veterans, leaders, MLAs and activists.
"Fraooq is trying to rejuvenate the party's lost soul and is striving to make it relevant. He has understood that going to Delhi (as MP) and leaving party in the hands of inexperienced Omar Abdullah has cost the party dearly," one of the top NC leaders told Early Times.
"Now when Dr Abdullah has arrived, some major reshuffle within the party is in the offing."
Sources revealed that Farooq has expressed anguish over alleviating incompetent people to the highest positions by his son and party president Omar Abdullah.
Farooq has "made it clear to Omar that there would be no place for his friends and close aides who have done much harm to NC than any good," the sources said.
They said that Farooq is mulling to relieve Davinder Singh Rana, Provincial President Jammu and his counterpart from Kashmir Nasir Aslam Wani.
Axe is likely to fall on Junaid Matoo, spokesman of NC, and Omar's political secretary Tanvir Sadiq.
The sources said that party activists have been complaining to Farooq that they were out-rightly ignored by Omar and that NC had become more like a friends club than a political party.
Meanwhile, it is also being learnt that Omar is batting for Rana, saying he has managed to secure a seat for the party in Jammu in midst of the anti-NC wave in the state.
Now when senior Abdulah has decided to 'sanitize' his party, it remains to be seen who would be appointed at the vital posts and what punishment shall be accorded to the ousted ones.
