Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 1: Seven district hospitals of Jammu division have exposed the tall claims of the previous governments to provide better health care facilities to rural people as CT scan (computerized tomography) machines worth crores installed in these hospitals are gathering dust for years in absence of Radiologists. Reliable source informed Early Times that the callous approach of Director Health Service could be gauged from the fact that it has installed CT Scan machine in all district hospital of Jammu division but in seven district hospitals (DH Doda, DH Rajouri, DH Poonch, DH Samba, DH Ramban, SDH Bhaderwah) the department has failed to appoint any radiologist due to which the district hospitals have become mere referral stations.
The CT scan single slice machine worth more than Rs.1 crore each procured by state government for these health institutions, and installed years back are still un-operational, due to non-availability of experts to operate the same.
However, department has trained technicians but a technician is not eligible to give opinion or report of CT Scan. To run the machine in one shift requires a Radiologist, a trained Technician, one paramedical and one class IV staff but it was very surprising that state government has failed to sanction requisite manpower especially for CT scan to run the machine. Whenever there was an accident or any patient visited hospital, doctors in these hospitals are compelled to refer them to Government Medical College Jammu for treatment despite having machine in these hospitals. Castigating higher authority of Health Department sources said, if the machines are available in these hospitals then why department had not posted staff here. "The purpose for which the machine was given to this hospital is defeated as the machine is of no use without expert", they said. It is pertinent to mention here that the CT scan was used extensively for accident victims, particularly in detecting injury to the brain. CT scan is done for all accident victims who have sustained head injuries. Deputy Director Health Services Jammu, Dr Ajay Gupta said that he was not authorizes to comment on the issue. However, Director BS Pathiana, did not respond to repeated phone calls.
