| HoDs in GMCH mislead MCI for personal gains | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 1: For vested interests, some Head of Departments (HoDs) of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu, have been misguiding the Medical Council of India for last few years.
Reliable Sources at Health and Medical Education Department divulge that MCI was established in 1956 as a statutory body for establishing uniform and high standards of medical education in India, in addition to granting recognition of medical qualifications, giving accreditation to medical schools, grants registration to medical practitioners, and monitors medical practice in India.
They further stated that MCI failed in creating a transparent system of medical college inspections and grant of recognition or de-recognition; rather there is geographical mal-distribution of medical colleges with clustering in some states and absence in several other states creating a big disparity in healthcare services; commercial private industry could not be checked and ; failure to instill respect for a professional code of ethics in the medical professionals and take disciplinary action against doctors found violating the code of Ethics.
"GMC Jammu seems to be live example of all the observations made by the Parliamentary team. The GMC has been inspected by MCI more than three times in last one year and few HoDs are involving the team in those things that not come under MCI's rules and regulations. They ask MCI to look into promotional aspects of the faculty of GMC by misguiding the MCI team and get their observations recorded to enhance faculty positions in few of the specialties to accommodate their 'blue eyed' i.e wives and friends to give them the benefits of accelerator promotions over other faculty members.
Wishing anonymity, a group of senior doctors told Early Times that it's all politics involved in MCI related activities in the college. The person who is holding charge of coordinator of MCI in GMC Jammu otherwise is not eligible to act as coordination as per IMC-Amendment 2nd Ordinance. After searching MCI website, it was observed by this correspondent that the strength of GMC Faculty is more than sufficient to run 150-MBBS student intake capacity; rather it is much more than that.
"But MCI representatives to give benefits of accelerated promotions to their relatives and friends got the faculty posts increased twice in last year as a evident from G.O.No:164-HME of 2015, dated 11-05-2015 & G.O.No:329-HME of 2015, dated:18-08-2015. Their lust to increase faculty posts is never ending and they have again compelled PMC, Jammu to send another proposal of enhancement of posts of different departments wherein again pick & choose policy has been adopted, "they stated.
They further added that every time they give non-genuine reason of deficiency and huge rush of patients in even those departments that do not deals with patient care, thereby making mockery of the system. A high level team of experts in the field needs to make to look into the working of GMC Jammu viz. infrastructure, faculty and paramedics need, workload on doctors, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching to make concrete policy to run this premier medical institution smoothly and to bring it out of clutches of sycophants. |
