PHE Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din's wish fulfilled!
Forest, Revenue to jointly probe Sedhav forest land grab

Syed Junaid Hashmi
JAMMU, Nov 29: State government is constituting a Joint Committee of Forest and Revenue departments to probe into land grab allegations against PHE Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din.
Forest Minister Mian Altaf while confirming this to Early Times said "As demanded by PHE Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Forest Department would soon constitute a joint committee of officers of both Forest and Revenue departments. They would look into the land issue and submit the report to the government within a stipulated period of time." Stating that the action is being taken purely because Taj Mohi-ud-Din has requested, Altaf preferred not to divulge any details about the actual make-up of the committee.
However, sources in the Forest Department said that committee would include two officers of the forest department, not below the rank of Divisional Forest Officer and two from the Revenue Department, both not below the rank of Tehsildar. The high profile committee would work under the direct supervision of Forest Minister Mian Altaf and would be assisted by field staff of both Revenue and Forest Departments, said the sources.
From the Revenue department, Patwaris and Girdawars would assist the Tehsildar in verifying the revenue records pertaining to the Sedhav forest area in Shopian district of South Kashmir, said the sources. They added that Range Officers and Foresters along with forest guards would assist the concerned DFOs in finding the truth behind the land grabbing allegations.
It would be a comprehensive exercise aimed at putting to rest the entire controversy, which has generated so much of heat during the last few months, an official of the Forest Department said. "The whole issue revolves around demarcation of the forest land. Once the demarcation process is carried out along with the staff of Revenue Department, facts would come forth. Though we are sure, it is forest land but till the time, the same is not tallied with the record of Revenue Department, the issue would remain alive in the public memory," added the official.
Taj Mohi-ud-Din has been facing allegations of grabbing 14 Kanals of forest land in Sedhav forest area of Shopian district of South Kashmir. The allegations were leveled by JKNPP MLC Syed Mohammed Rafiq Shah in the Legislative Council during last assembly session in Srinagar. On Shah demand, Chairman of Council Amrit Malhotra had constituted a house committee to probe the allegations. Taj had objected to it and managed to get the committee shelved within a month of its constitution.
Following this, Early Times exclusively reported the fresh findings of the forest department wherein DFO Shopian had confirmed forest land grabbed by Taj Mohi-ud-Din. This led to Taj writing a letter to Forest Minister Mian Altaf asking him to probe the allegations being leveled against him. He had, in the same letter, assured the Forest Minister to return the forest land, if found grabbed by him. Forest Minister Mian Altaf reacted within days, assuring that Taj's wish would be fulfilled.
