Srinagar-Jammu highway through, Ladakh region remains cut off | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 20: Both way traffic continued on Srinagar and Jammu highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country after vehicular movement was disrupted for hours due to landslides and shooting stones. Meanwhile the Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow. However, trolleys and other heavy vehicles were not allowed to move on the highway to avoid traffic jam since the road is narrow at some places due to landslides, official sources said. A traffic police official said here today hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and essentials for Kashmir valley left winter capital, Jammu. Similarly a large number of vehicles, including empty trucks and oil tankers, left different parts of the Kashmir valley for Jammu. However, truck drivers alleged that they remained stranded for the past three days on the highway as only security forces, Army and passenger vehicles were allowed to move from both sides. Traffic was suspended yesterday due to landslides at Penthal, triggered by heavy rains. However, traffic was restored after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway put into service the sophisticated machines and men to clear the landslides. Meanwhile, the highway connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, remained closed due to more than ten feet of snow accumulated at several places, including Zojila pass since December last year. However, the BRO has already started snow clearance operation from Drass and Sonamarg areas. But there was fresh snowfall recently, hampering the snow clearance operation as there was avalanche threat. |
