Fearing defeat, Shariq tries to woo pro-Pakistan Geelani
Kashmir's Election Scene

JAMMU, Apr 20: All the three National Conference Lok Sabha candidates Farooq Abdullah (Srinagar), Mehboob Beg (Anantnag) and Sharif-ud-Din Shariq (Baramulla) are in deep trouble. Fearing defeat at the hands of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidates Mehbooba Mufti (Anantnag), Muzaffar Hussain Beig (Baramulla) and Tariq Hamid Karra (Srinagar), the NC candidates have not only unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign against their potential political rivals and have been terming them divisive and communal, but also threatening New Delhi, the PDP leadership and its supporters and seeking support from hardcore pro-Pakistan separatists and fanatics like Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
It was Farooq Abdullah who bemoaned on Thursday that he didn't have bombs and rifles to target the PDP men and sought to create fear psychosis among the gullible people of Kashmir, a threat and an ugly attempt that vitiated the election scene in the Valley that forced PDP president Mehbooba Mufti to approach the Election Commission against Farooq Abdullah. Farooq Abdullah was condemned not only by the PDP leadership, but also by a section of powerful media, including news channels like Times Now, with the cronies of the NC president shamelessly defending the Union Minister and father of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. It was clear from the nasty and outrageous statements of Farooq Abdullah that he was not sure of his victory. Frustrated and desperate as he was, he indulged in the PDP-bashing and committed a criminal act to frighten the opposition party and its cadres and supporters.
If Farooq Abdullah threatened the PDP leadership hoping such an approach could help him repeat his victory in the Srinagar Parliamentary constituency, his crony and a well-known fanatic Mehboob Beg sought to arouse anti-India passions by invoking the atrocious Article 370 that has created a high wall between Sringar and the rest of the country; promoted separatism and communalism; jeopardized the social, economic and political interests and rights of the minorities, SCs, STs, OBCs and refugees from west Pakistan; granted unbridled legislative, executive and financial powers to the arrogant, regressive and anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh Kashmiri leadership; and created an impression the world over that Jammu & Kashmir is a disputed territory. "He (Narendra Modi) keeps on talking about scrapping Article 370, but he is unaware of the fact that the special status was granted to the state by a constituent assembly, which has long been dissolved," he said on Saturday while addressing a roadshow at Shangus in Anantnag district. "Modi is a threat to the secular fabric of India, including that of our state," he also said, adding that the minorities would feel "suffocated', if Modi was elevated to the Prime Minister's office". He only made a fool of himself by making a ridiculous statement that even the Parliament cannot abrogate Article 370, as the constituent assembly which adopted it stands dissolved. Beg only hoodwinked and misled the Kashmiri Muslims by saying what he said for the sake of votes. The people know that the Parliament is supreme and it can abrogate or amend any of the Articles of the Constitution. Even the President of India can amend or repeal Article 370 using powers vested in him by this Article itself. He simply has to issue an executive order after the Union Cabinet approaches him/her and ask him/her to amend or repeal this pernicious Article that has rendered the people unreal and established a sort of local oligarchy in the state with a handful of Kashmiri leaders and their cronies establishing their stranglehold over the state's polity and financial institutions. He only invites contempt when he says that there exists no constituent assembly. Constituent assembly is not a permanent institution. It ceases to exist after it adopts a constitution so framed and it is implemented. After it ceases to exist, the power to amend the constitution gets automatically transferred to the legislature. The fact of the matter is that frustrated Beg did what he did to befool the people and garner votes. He, like his master Farooq Abdullah, had nothing to offer to his constituency and, hence, his nasty and untenable statements.
The third candidate Sharif-ud-Din Shariq took a different route to improve his electoral chances. He on Saturday called Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani over telephone. Nobody would buy his argument that he had a telephonic conversation with Geelani only to know about his health and well being. "I called him to know about his well being. We didn't discuss anything else during our conversation," Shariq was quoted as saying. He also took on the PDP and said the "PDP leaders are mad and can say anything". Obviously, he hinted at what Mehbooba Mufti had said about Farooq Abdullah two days ago while lambasting him for his bomb and rifle statement. Indeed, Shariq talked to Geelani and sought his support so that he could avert the impending disaster. The truth, in short, is that the conspicuous presence of the PDP candidates in the fray has frightened the NC candidates.
