Modi wants Ping to settle border row
7/16/2014 10:27:27 PM

Yes the Chinese President Xi Jin Ping is correct when he said, during his latest meeting with Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in Brazil, that when India and Chin meet the world watches. He is correct in the sense that a meeting, that too held in an atmosphere of cordiality, between two top Indian and Chinese leaders is something worth watching because of the 52-year old bitterness over the border row. In fact most of the Indians are not ready to forget the Chinese aggression of 1962 which had cast a shadow on the political stature of India. Since then the border row keeps tension alive. And what is interesting is the way the Chinese leadership has started trying to mend fences with India from the day Narendra Modi was installed as the Prime Minister. During the last there were four engagements between the two sides. First was the visit of top Chinese emissary to New Delhi which was followed by the visit of Indian vice-president Hamid Ansari to Beijing, and Army Chief, Bikram Singh’s trip to Chin. And the latest was the meeting between Modi and Ping in Brazil during the BRIC conference. and when the two met political analysts called it a significant development, because China invited India to attend a summit of Asia and Pacific (APEC) leaders as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Xi Jin Ping and discussed various issues, including the need to resolve the boundary question in an amicable manner.

The two sides described the 80-minute long meeting as a good meeting because of good discussion. That the two leaders attached deep significance to their first meeting is evident from the way Modi and Ping extended the session of their interaction. The meeting was scheduled for 40 minutes but it went on for 80 minutes as it was free-wheeling discussion without any constraints. The two leaders appeared well prepared for the meeting as both of them referred to the statements made by the other before they assumed power. Though Modi and Ping discussed various issues pertained to politics, trade, economy and travel, the former insisted on resolving the boundary question amicably in the interest of peace. The Indian side described the meeting as fruitful and meaningful indicating that Ping may have assured Modi that China was keen to resolve the border row. prime minister Modi has rightly emphasized that there should be no incidents on the border that would undermine the bilateral relations. If Modi referred, during the talks, to the Chinese incursion in Ladakh he also emphasized on the economic relations between the two countries and talked about cooperation in the infrastructure sector, industrial parks and investment. He referred to the adverse trade imbalance against India and sought correction of the situation. Xi acknowledged that there was a possibility of enhanced trade, particularly in the services sector from the Indian side and the increased Chinese tourist numbers to India.
Yes,Modi is in search of cordial ties with not only neighbouring countries but with the developed nations too. In this context he has already been invited by the US President Barack Obama. Once he is able to build bridges with China and Pakistan he could easily make provisions for rapid economic progress in India. Hitherto, the level of progress in the economic field has been slow because of emphasis on upgrading the security grid on the India-Pakistan and India-China borders. On developing the security grid on the borders and within the country for meeting challenges from terrorists, Naxals and Maoists India has been spending a fortune on it leaving a fraction of its revenue on developing the sectors of industry, agriculture and allied fields. Without compromising on national security, sovereignty and integrity New Delhi has to initiate measures for promoting cordial ties with China. Once New Delhi and Beijing turned into friends there would be no other option for Islamabad to follow suit and promote friendly relations with India. Once it materialized one can expect peace in the South Asian region. And one does hope China plays a vital role in ensuring peace in South Asia.
