GMC Hospital living hell for patients, air conditioning remains distant dream | Rising mercury, humidity wreak havoc | | ET Report JAMMU, July 16: Rising mercury coupled with humidity has made Government Medical College & Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu living hell for patients admitted in various wards of the multi-story building. These patients, mostly belonging to various far-flung areas of Jammu region are bearing brunt of the summer heat while Medical Education Department is unaware of the traumas and problems which patients encounter in Government Medical College & Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu. From ground floor to top, patients are the ones who are treated shabbily and made to suffer for no fault of theirs. Student café's, canteens, halls, library, administrative blocks alongwith rooms of the faculty have all been provided with air conditioning facility but wards have left out for the reasons better known to the concerned officials. Doctors treating the patients admitted in various wards of the Government hospital do accept that due to intense heat and humidity, recovery of patients does get delayed. They maintain that hospital air conditioning assumes a more important role than just comfort. Doctors are of the opinion that these days proper air conditioning is a factor in patient therapy and in some cases, it is the major treatment. Controlled environment provides more rapid physical improvement than those patients with no air conditioning, said a senior doctor. He added that patients with Thyrotoxicosis do not tolerate hot, humid conditions or heat waves. Another doctor said that a cool and dry environment favours loss of heat by radiation and skin evaporation and may save the life of a patient. He maintained that cardiac patients may be unable to maintain circulation necessary to ensure normal heat loss if the air conditioning is not available. A cardiac surgeon said that air conditioning in cardiac wards and rooms, especially those with congestive heart failure, is necessary and considered therapeutic. He added that air conditioning for patients with head injuries, subjected to brain operations and those with barbiturate poisoning may have hyperthermia, especially in the hot environment, due to a disturbance in the heat regulatory center of the brain. An important factor in recovery is an environment in which the patient can loose heat by radiation and evaporation, and that means a cool room with dehumidified air, said the surgeon. He stressed that rheumatoid arthritis patients react better to treatment in an environment of 90°F and 35 percent relative humidity. Dry Conditions, in other cases, will be a hazard to the ill and debilitated by contributing to secondary infection or infection totally unrelated to the clinical condition that caused the hospitalization, Clinical Areas devoted to upper respiratory disease treatment and cute care, as well as general clinical areas of entire hospital should be maintained at a relative humidity of 30-60 percent. Chronic Pulmonary disease patients often have Respiratory Tract Secretions and as these secretions accumulate and increase in viscosity, the patient exchange of heat and water is reduced. Therefore, inspiration of warm humidified air is essential to prevent dehydration, said the surgeon. |
