Deadly mishap claims 7 lives on Srinagar-Baramulla highway

SRINAGAR, July 16: In one of the deadliest accidents in the recent past seven persons died when the vehicle in which they were travelling met an accident with an army vehicle in the Shalteng area early in the morning today. Eye-witnesses told Early Times that a Tavera bearing registration number JK-01P 1464 rammed into an army vehicle which was coming from the opposite side in Shalteng area, some distance away from the Noora Hospital.
The impact of the collision was so strong that there was a bang with people hearing it from a distance. "The Tavera was on its way from Sopore to Srinagar and it was moving at a very fast speed. Near Shalteng it tried to overtake another vehicle and the driver did not slow down his speed. The army vehicle was moving on its own side but it too was going at a fast speed. There was a head on collision between the two vehicles with Tavera bearing the major brunt," said eye-witnesses.
The impact of the collision was so deadly that some of the passengers including its driver got stuck in the Tavera. These people had to be virtually pulled out of the vehicle but after intense struggle. The Tavera suffered extensive damages in the accident while as the army vehicle also suffered damages. Unconfirmed reports said that three persons died at the site of the accident. The injured were shifted to the Noora hospital where doctors confirmed that three persons had already passed away. Later on four more persons succumbed to their injuries and the death toll as such reached to seven. Two more persons have received injuries and are lodged in a hospital. They are Ashiq Hussain of Diver Pattan and Sheikh Zaid son of Abdul Qayoom of Naseem Bagh, Sopore. The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Rafiq Antoo son of Ghulam Mohammad of Dugliteng-Baramulla, Ghulam Nabi Dar son of Mohammad Ismail of Krankshivan Colony, Sopore, Ghulam Hassan Bhat (driver) son of Abdul Samad of Dangarpora-Baramulla, Naseer Ahmad Mir son of Mohammad Jamal of Mumakak-Sopore, Pir Mohammed Syed son of Pir Sharif-ud-Din of Ashpir, Sopore, Mohammad Ramzan son of Ghulam Nabi of Sopore and Zareefa wife of Ashiq Hussain of Diver Pattan.
Immediately after the mishap a group of people caught hold of the driver of the army vehicle and beat him to the pulp. They brought him down and put the vehicle on fire. The protesters argued with the army personnel who were part of the convoy that was heading to Baramulla from Srinagar. The accident led to standstill with the traffic remaining suspended for some hours on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. The angry protesters pelted stones on army personnel and the situation turned very tense in the area. The ding dong battle between the two sides carried on for some time before police arrived the scene. The police personnel immediately swung into action and arrested the army driver. They also lodged FIR 139/2014 under section 279, 337, 304 A RPC at Police Station, Parimpora.
