SRINAGAR, July 16: Fruit industry which is said to be an important component of the Valley's economy is suffering for want of the government's attention. Kashmiri apple which is known world over for its taste is dying a slow death due to the negligence of the Agriculture Department. The deadly scab disease has taken a heavy toll on this year's apple crop and there are fears that the people associated with the fruit industry may suffer immensely and the loss could be in crores together and it may result in the breakdown of the concerned people.
This deadly disease has caused the total destruction to the fruit industry and is for sure to deprive thousands of families of the healthy income which they normally yielded from this crop. Not only this, it is the labors that will get crushed on account of the low production of the apple. "The concerned authorities have maintained a criminal silence over this burning issue and they haven't taken any step for the encouragement of the people associated with the fruit industry," said Liyaqat Ahmad from sopore while talking to Early Times. Liyaqat was of the opinion that the pesticides which the people get from the market are substandard, and the sale of which is going on unabated and under the nose of the concerned authorities.
The authorities, as per liyaqat, are behaving like the mute spectators much to the disappointment of the people associated with the fruit industry. If sources are to be believed the loss to the fruit industry which is estimated at five crore rupees is because of the fact that almost all the orchards of the valley are in the grip of the deadly scab, thanks to ill attitude of the concerned authorities. "It is the government's apathy which has dashed our hopes to the ground, because by supplying substandard pesticides and manures, we have been stabbed in the back.
The hard work done by the concerned people has been wasted," said the president of the fruit growers association.
As the people in power have no time in the world to look into the problems as faced by the people associated with the fruit industry because their minds seem to be in the grip of election fever blame the fruit growers. These people in power understand only that very thing which is related to election. Rest of the issues seem to be meaningless for them. The people who are associated with the fruit industry say that if the government doesn't come to their help, they will be left with no choice but to commit suicides.
