Zahid appointed as Competent Authority by ASI for J&K | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 16: The Archaeological Survey of India, (ASI) New Delhi, has specified Competent Authorities in all states of the country to grant permission or otherwise for construction within prohibited area (100 meters from protected area)/regulated areas (200 meters from prohibited area) of any monument. The State Archaeology has stressed that any desirous person should seek permission of the Competent Authority before execution of the construction near any monument. The Director, Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K, M S Zahid has been appointed as Competent Authority for J&K State in pursuance to Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 2010. This was stated by M S Zahid Director Archeology J&K. In the follow-up action Pravin Srivastava, Member Secretary, National Monument Authority, New Delhi visited Kashmir Valley recently and held a meeting in Srinagar with Special Secretary, Tourism, Director Archives, Archaeology and Museums,(Competent Authority J&K) and other official of Archaeological Survey of India, to ensure strict implementation of the Act. Zahid while detailing about the meeting said various decisions were taken to ensure the proper preservation and protection of Ancient monuments. He said accordingly, general public have been asked that any person who is desirous to undertake construction or make repairs of his house/structure near any protected monument should seek permission from Competent Authority (Director, Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K) before execution of such construction/repairs. Zahid said punitive action warranted under law will be taken against the people violating the guidelines. He said various steps have been taken by the Government for the preservation of ancient monuments and archaeology sites in the State. It may be recalled that Zahid has been responsible for discovering various ancient monuments and Archeology sites in the State including Kutbal in Shangus block of Anantnag Kashmir an ancient site dating back to Harpa period. Besides he has also done a lot of work on ancient sites at Letpora in Pulwama district, Kashmir Valley and Kupwara district of North Kashmir. |
