Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 27: The November 21, 2010, encounter killing of Rakesh Giri had raised hue and cry across the winter capital, mainly because the spot, where he was said to have fallen prey to police bullets near Satyam Resorts, Greater Kailash, was devoid of splattered blood and blood stains.
Though there was no concrete evidence to his alleged fake encounter, police too had not come out in their protection against the hue and cry. Police had termed Giri as a contract killer and claimed that he was killed in the retaliatory fire.
Giri's father had, however, denied police claim that his son killed people in lieu of money and said he did not deserve to be killed in the "encounter". He wanted police to send his son's case to court to decide the quantum of punishment to him for his alleged criminal acts. But no Jammu MLA or any other so-called pro-Jammu political parties had then bothered to support the point of view of the Giri's father.
Kishori of Pakki Dhakki was also killed over a decade back in a much "controversial" encounter. Hue and cry was raised that time too but nothing had happened. He was an accused in the high-profile murder of a top city financier.
SI Sandeep Pal Singh too had died under suspicious circumstances after he was picked up by Bakshi Nagar police in connection with his questioning in an alleged criminal case.
Their families had then said that police had no authority to kill any criminal and that their job was limited to send their cases to courts of law.
Giri's father had stated that courts ought to take suo moto notice of such encounters and alleged police brutality.
Even the Jammu leaders, especially those of BJP, had not raised this valid point at the appropriate platforms. Their one right step in this direction could have been helpful in bringing a change in the otherwise "rotten" system.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who wastes no time in criticising such encounters whenever these take place in the Valley too had maintained silence. A small statement from him for a CBI probe into the incident would have made a big difference.
