EC to take final call on JK elections shortly
9/23/2014 11:05:21 PM
Early Times Report
NEW DELHI, Sept 23: The Election Commission is not in a haste to hold elections in the flood ravaged Jammu and Kashmir. The EC will take final decision after things settle down to normalcy.
According to sources, the Centre has been briefed about the extent of damage and the possible time required to get the things back to the normalcy. The EC has also been briefed about the challenges of the administration in couping with building firstly infrastructure.
The elections in the state are scheduled by the end of the November and new Government is to be formed in the first week of the January. However, the possibility of the elections holding on schedule is unlikely.
The EC has started the process of the seeking details from the Deputy Commissioners on the extent of the damage in their respective areas. The EC after seeking and seeing the report will hold video-conferencing with the DCs and then will discuss the matter with the Central Government before taking a final call.
One of the major handicaps in holding elections on due date is that it will take some time to build infrastructure in the hilly areas and by the time there is a semblance of the normalcy the winter would have set in and then it would not be much time to move logistics and forces and also for election campaign.
Another worrisome factor emerging especially in the Kashmir valley is the seething anger on the streets. The people are quite angry over the complete failure of the state administration in reaching out to the people. In these circumstances the elections are the last thing in the mind of the people.
Political parties fear that if they go and ask people for vote in the streets they might have to face hostile reaction as was received by the media when it was covering the floods.
"Things are quite difficult and EC is taking all aspects into consideration. But elections on due date are most likely to happen," said a senior official.
