Srinagar, Sept 23 : As floods hit every nook and corner of Kashmir, houseboat owners too had to face loss worth tens of crores amid apathy from government to rescue, rehabilitate and reconstruct the damaged structures.
According to the details received, total 857 houseboats were damaged by recent floods in river Jehlum, Dal lake, Chinar Bagh and Nigeen lake, besides according to the reports houseboat owners like rest of the tourism players of Kashmir are going through the worst phase of diminishing scale of tourism in Kashmir since September 1, 2014 after it started raining ferociously across Jammu and Kashmir.
The details received from the Houseboat owners association reveal that seven well-furnished houseboats each worth Rs 2.5 cr were damaged fully at different places ,arround 250 houseboats were damaged partially in Jehlum,Dal Lake,Chinar Bagh and Nigeen lake and more arround 600 houseboats were damaged badly by floods at different places across Srinagar district.
"Our loss is huge or in a way the flood has not stopped for us yet. When it started raining heavily in Kashmir, there were apprehensions of flood. Tourists cancelled bookings and so far since September 1 each houseboat owner had to face additional loss of one lakh rupees as not a single tourist moved to sinking houseboats during this period," said Azim Tuman, a houseboat owner.
President houseboat owners association Kashmir, Muhammad Yousuf Chopri said that 'Government which exist nowhere at present in Kashmir actually is responsible for flood mayhem in Kashmir as according to him 'none other than government agencies have allowed illegal encroachments after allegedly taking bribe from people around river banks which in turn reduced the size of rivers over the years and ultimately increased chances of floods.' "We are yet to see anybody from the government side. We are thankful to some NGOs, youth groups, who reached to us during flood and brought life saving drugs, food and other important items for our families who were scattered after the floods," Chopri said.
He also said that previous governments of Jammu and Kashmir had spent crores of rupees under various schemes in the name of beautification and renovation of Dal lake but these unfortunately could not rehabilitate Dal Dwellers and people living around Dal lake.
