Kashmir Floods : Sheir Colony without relief; people ask Govt not to play vote politics

Syed Tahir Bukhari

BARAMULLA, Sept 22 : The state government may have paid some attention to the people of Srinagar district in the recent floods which took many lives but has ignored in all respects Sheir Colony of Sopore in Baramulla which is predominantly occupied by labourers.
The colony is popularly known as Sheir Colony which got its name from Sheri Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who used to come here frequently when he was chief minister of the state and allowed the people to settle here on government land.
Abdul Hamid Sheikh of Sheir Colony Sopore said that in no time the waters flooded most of the village and people were wailing and running helter-skelter to save themselves. The area is still inundated in water and we don't know what to do as we lost everything like our own houses, crops and much more.
"We don't know if it was flood or the death alarm for Kashmiris. We have not seen such a situation before. We did not know what to do. The locals from other areas of Sopore and Baramulla came to our rescue, while we saw no one from the state government," he said.
"We have been rendered shelterless. We do not have food too. We are now searching the debris to look for anything useful, but there is not much we can find. Most of the things have been washed away," he said as tears rolled down his cheeks.
Zareefa Begum, an old aged lady, said almost everyone in the village has the same woeful tale to narrate and with no help whatsoever from the government the residents have left everything to God for the floods might have taken everything from them, and their faith remains unshattered.
However, locals alleged that they have been ignored by the state government on all fronts. There is no dewatering since rain has stopped and we are left in a state of melancholy. They said ruling government will definitely come to us for their vote bank politics but at this moment we don't want them to play any more politics here.
Many residents are unhappy over the complete absence of their local government and police in the wake of the disaster.
The state government is useless or rather we should say crippled; every department is totally defunct. Locals have left their homes and are living in a nearby Public Health Center (PHC) Tarzoo, and in tents whereas they complained that no paramedical staff was available from 4 pm onwards.
No representative of any newspaper or a news channel has so far visited this colony. When this correspondent reached the colony today, its inhabitants were all praise for Early Times.
