Make campaign against adulteration permanent
10/22/2014 9:46:58 PM
As has been the practice during last several decades Civic bodies, health officials and other Government agencies have swung into action in various parts of the country for penalizing those selling unhygienic and adulterated sweets and other milk products.Television news channel pictures make a horrible story with confectioners engaged in preparing sweets and other milk products at places close to public urinals and even latrines. And the crackdown on those engaged in preparing adulterated sweets and other eatables has become simply a pre-Diwali exercise.Yes,the intake of sweets, candies and other milk based delicacies touches a new high during the annual Diwali festival but this does not mean that people consume sweets only during this festival of lights. For all the 12 months in a year people consume sweets in tones and during all these months there is no checking against adulteration or on sale of unhygienic milk products.Do the law enforcing agencies believe that adulteration is possible only when the demand for sweets and candies rises in geometric progression ? If they do they are wrong because in India even drinking water supplied by the Government agencies is unsafe.
And if the Civic agency in Jammu has swung into action during the pre-Diwali festival days for checking sale of adulterated milk and milk products, especially sweets it is just part of the national phenomenon. The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has taken 13 food samples ahead of the festival of lights . The market checking has been intensified ahead of the festival to stop the sale of adulterated sweets.A special drive has been launched against adulteration in commonly used food items by a team of Food Safety Officers, Assistant Sanitation Officers and other field staff of the corporation under the supervision of Health Officer .
Teams are inspecting various food establishments like hotels, restaurants, provisional stores, food stalls, prominent sweet shops and fruit juice corners in different areas falling within the limits of Municipal Corporation.
The samples have been sent to the Food Analyst to ascertain standard of purity. Moreover, about one quintal of sweets found stored under unhygienic conditions were also destroyed on spot. The crackdown on those selling unhygienic sweets and milk products in Jammu is laudable as is the case in other states in India. If the civic agencies and other health officials launch a campaign against sale of adulterated and unhygienic milk products, especially sweets, why this campaign is restricted to pre-Diwali festival period when these agencies know that sale of unadulterated food items has become a regular feature of commercial activity in India ?
The central and the state Governments need to know that on one side India has been trying to attract large groups of foreign tourists to the country on the other these foreigners develop a cold feet as far as their selection of India for their travel and holidaying is concerned. It is so only because these foreigners are forced to drink beer instead of water.
They are forced to bank on limited food items from posh hotels and restaurants. If India wants to encourage foreigners' visit to the country the central and the state Governments need to make crackdown against those selling adulterated food items a regular feature.
The campaign against those selling unhygienic food items, especially sweets, should be carried out each week and each month. At present there is no fear among those selling adulterated items.Apart from attracting foreign tourists India needs to promote good health for its 1.15 billion people. This is possible if sale of adulterated food items and unhygienic sweets, milk products and other eatables is banned.Any violation should get heavy penalty, including imprisonment and fines.Let the NC led coalition Government make campaign against sale of unhygienic and adulterated food items part of its programme if it wants to fight antincumbency factor ahead of Assembly poll.
