Omar rakes up Kashmir issue to woo voters | | | As was expected National Confer ence has raked up the Kashmir is sue during its ongoing pre-poll campaign in Jammu and Kashmir. It is a different issue if the National Conference will play safe by not raking up the Kashmir issue in the regions of Jammu and Ladakh where majority of people treat state's accession with India as the ultimate solution to the problem. There used to be a time when Pakistani leaders were blamed for raking up the Kashmir issue during the election campaigns. And even the NC leaders used to berate the Pakistani leaders for raising the Kashmir issue during the poll rallies. And since 1996 Assembly elections the National Conference used to rake up the issue of restoration of autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir.Since the ensuing Assembly election is crucial for the very survival of the National Conference which stands challenged by the PDP, Congress and the BJP,its leadership seems to raise even extraneous issues in order to woo voters. And the easy option,it has found,is to touch the issue of Kashmir. And the NC leadership has voiced its commitment to work for the settlement of the Kashmir issue which is key to peace in the south Asian region. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has vowed that he and his party, National Conference, would not stop till the Kashmir issue was resolved. He criticised the opposition parties for having adopted silence on the issue..Omar has said that he and the National Conference would not rest or withdraw its political and ideological stand till the Kashmir issue was resolved with a political solution that "takes into account the political realities and sentiments" of the people of the state."I have always maintained that Kashmir needs a political solution. I have said this not only on the floor of the Assembly but also in front of the visiting Prime Minister," Omar said while addressing an election rally in north Kashmir's Bandipora district."Let me assure you that we will never ever waver in our stand on the resolution of the Kashmir issue. We are not like others whose fancy, innovative political slogans have a one-year shelf life after which they cease to exist for that party," he has said. By demanding settlement of the Kashmir issue as per the wishes of people of the state does Omar plan to keep the separatists in good humour so that they do not take in hand added measures for enforcing their call for poll boycott ?It seems so because separatists too have been demanding solution of the Kashmir issue as per the wishes of people of the state. They do because they have survived only by raising the Kashmir issue even at religious congregations. Whatever may be the compulsions on the part of the NC leadership Omar Abdullah seems to have no other idea for wooing voters. The BJP won the Lok Sabha election in 2014 on the plank of development. It won the Assembly election in a couple of state's too on the slogan of development. And the same party is trying to make inroads into the areas where the NC, PDP and others have pockets of influence only on the slogan of development. Why has not Omar tried the development card while addressing pre-poll rallies ? He has not done so because during the six years he headed the Government: Jammu and Kashmir failed to witness marked development in sectors of industry, agriculture, horticulture, health and other fields. He has not laid emphasis on restoration of autonomy because he believes that it is an old unfinished idea which has lost charm for attracting voters.Hence he believes that playing the Kashmir card could get votes for the NC. Will he succeed ? Only the poll results can answer this question. |
