PIL regarding conversion of land used for Basmati Rice into colonies | HC directs Revenue Commissioner to file comprehensive report or appear in person | | Jammu, Nov 12: In a Public Interest Litigation filed by advocate Ranjeet Singh Chib in which he has shown his concern for illegal conversion of the land used for growing the world famous Basmati Rice into concrete jungle in sub-division R S Pura, a high court division bench of chief justice M M Kumar and Justice TashiRabstan today directed the revenue commissioner to either file a comprehensive report or appear in person in the court. As per the PIL, petitioner submitted that thousands of kanals of land has been converted into banquet halls, residential colonies and business complexes in last five years without obtaining permission from the revenue minister as required under J&K Land Revenue Act. The bench observed that earlier this court had directed the state respondents to constitute a committee headed by an officer not below the rank of Assistant Commissioner to make survey of the area and submit his report regarding actual area within sub-district, R S Pura and converted into non-agricultural use i.e., construction of residential housing colonies/ commercial buildings. The committee shall submit its report before next date of hearing, but they have not complied with the direction and granted last opportunity to do the needful failing which Commissioner/Secretary Revenue shall remain present in person on December 111, 2014.
