Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 11: Massive protests broke out in the Nowshehra area of Srinagar city against the acid throwing incident resulting in injuries to a girl pursuing Law from one of the Private Law Colleges of the city. The shopkeepers downed their shutters as a mark of protest against the incident. Reports said that a group of youth traveling in a Maruti Car threw acid on the girl while she was walking on the main road. The girl belonging to the AloochiBagh area of the city sustained injuries in her face and was immediately rushed to Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura. Her condition is stated to be critical in the hospital. The incident sent shock waves among the residents and shopkeepers of the area. They came out in protest on the main road connecting Soura with LalChowk and other important commercial as well as residential areas of the Srinagar city. The protesters demanded stern action against the culprits and wanted police to speed up their investigation in the matter. "We hadn't imagined in the wildest of our dreams that this kind of incident will take place. What is more annoying is that criminals used a vehicle which was without the number plate despite the fact that police personnel remain deployed in strength. It has simply left everybody concerned," said Shabir Ahmad, a local. The protesters created hurdles on the road and as result of it transport was suspended for hours together. The acid throwing incident has shocked everybody and at the same time it has left the parents scared about their daughters who leave the houses for one reason or other. Muneer Ahmad, a local said that today's incident has exposed the efficiency of the police department since the incident took place in broad day light. Muneer went on saying that it is the testimony to the fact that vehicles ply on the roads without the number plates under the nose of law enforcing agencies. In the meantime police has launched a massive manhunt to nab the attackers who threw acid on the girl. A police spokesman said that two unknown attackers threw acid on a girl (name withheld) near Law College Tawheedabad, Nowshera in the jurisdiction of police station Soura. "The attackers fled in a white Maruti car having a sticker "MANSA" pasted on its rear glass. Police has registered a case FIR no. 136 in this regard and investigation has been taken up. The girl has been hospitalized. A massive manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits,' said the police spokesman.
