SRINAGAR, Dec 11: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said that the pro-active role played by the security forces in Kashmir valley has helped a lot in normalizing the ground situation with the results emerging in the form of tremendous voter turn-out during the ongoing assembly elections.
Sharing his views with media here, the Defence Minister said that people are feeling free to move out and are casting their vote without any fear in the state especially Kashmir valley. He made a particular reference to the Tral area and said that voting percentage in the Tral assembly seat increased many times in this election.
"Not long ago the voting percentage in the Tral was somewhat around 1 percent. This has jumped to more than 37 percent in the present assembly election. It clearly shows that the forces have been able to inculcate a sense of safety among the people and they are feeling free to cast their vote," said Parrikar. The defence minister said that forces have achieved tremendous success in their fight against militancy adding that only stray incidents relating to militancy take place as on date. He complimented all ranks of forces for their successful operations against militants and said that day is not far off when militancy would be rooted out from the state.

Top notch security officials present there briefed the defence minister about the prevailing security situation in the state. The defence minister appreciated the effectiveness of the intelligence and operational grid and the much higher success rate this year, in neutralizing infiltration attempts. Meanwhile, in a press release a defence spokesman said that on his arrival at Srinagar, the defence minister was received by Chief of Army Staff, Gen Dalbir Singh, Northern Area Commander, Lt Gen D S Hooda and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps Lt Gen Subrata Saha.
