Defence Minister lauds security forces for achieving success in anti-militancy operations | Praises their role for making environment conducive for free polling | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Dec 11: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said that the pro-active role played by the security forces in Kashmir valley has helped a lot in normalizing the ground situation with the results emerging in the form of tremendous voter turn-out during the ongoing assembly elections. Sharing his views with media here, the Defence Minister said that people are feeling free to move out and are casting their vote without any fear in the state especially Kashmir valley. He made a particular reference to the Tral area and said that voting percentage in the Tral assembly seat increased many times in this election. "Not long ago the voting percentage in the Tral was somewhat around 1 percent. This has jumped to more than 37 percent in the present assembly election. It clearly shows that the forces have been able to inculcate a sense of safety among the people and they are feeling free to cast their vote," said Parrikar. The defence minister said that forces have achieved tremendous success in their fight against militancy adding that only stray incidents relating to militancy take place as on date. He complimented all ranks of forces for their successful operations against militants and said that day is not far off when militancy would be rooted out from the state. Parrikar visited the War Memorial of the Chinar Corps at Badamibagh here and paid tributes to the martyrs by laying the wreath at the Memorial. Top notch security officials present there briefed the defence minister about the prevailing security situation in the state. He was informed that a robust counter infiltration grid has been put in place to thwart away infiltration bid by militants from across the border. The defence minister appreciated the effectiveness of the intelligence and operational grid and the much higher success rate this year, in neutralizing infiltration attempts. He said that sustained and successful operations against the militants have contributed significantly towards a secure environment in the state. Meanwhile, in a press release a defence spokesman said that on his arrival at Srinagar, the defence minister was received by Chief of Army Staff, Gen Dalbir Singh, Northern Area Commander, Lt Gen D S Hooda and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps Lt Gen Subrata Saha. "The Minister was apprised about the robust counter infiltration grid along the Line of Control and the counter militant grid in the hinterland established by Army. He was also given an overview of the counter infiltration and counter militant operations undertaken by the Corps in the recent past," said the defence spokesman. The defence spokesman said that defence minister inspected the weapons, ammunition and war like stores recovered during the recent operations. He complimented the commanders for the high level of integration achieved with JKP and CRPF. "After addressing all ranks of the Corps, the Defence Minister interacted at length with the soldiers and complimented them on the high state of morale and operational preparedness. He lauded the Army personnel for their selfless service towards national security. He assured that the nation stands behind them and would support them in all their endeavours," said the defence spokesman. |
