Three policemen injured as militants carry out grenade attack on police station in Anantnag
IED recovered on Shopian-Bahibugh road

SRINAGAR, Dec 11: Three police jawans were injured in South Kashmir's Anantnag district after a grenade by suspected militants landed in the lawns of a police station. The injured cops were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Police officials said that at around 9:15 PM militants lobbed a grenade towards the police station located in the Sherbagh locality in the Anantnag district. The grenade exploded with a big bang inside the premises of police station resulting in injuries to three cops.
The injured policemen identified as Constable Zahoor Ahmad, Mohammad Ashraf and Farooq Ahmad were immediately taken to district hospital Anantnag for treatment. The blast created panic among the local residents of the area. Police and army cordoned off the whole area and launched searches to trace the grenade thrower.
The grenade attack assumes significance since it occurs just few days before the assembly polls in the Anantnag district. Six assembly seats of this South Kashmir district would go to polls on December 18along with eight seats of Srinagar district and two seats in Shopian district in Kashmir valley. Two seats in Jammu division would also go to polls on the same day.
Ever since the elections have been conducted in Kashmir militants have stepped up their attacks across Kashmir. One Assistant Sub Inspector of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) died while as around one dozen police and CRPF jawans were injured in two grenade attacks over the past two weeks in Srinagar and Pulwama respectively.
Earlier in the day a major tragedy was averted after army recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in South Kashmir. The IED was later on destroyed by the bomb disposal teams of army and police.
A defence spokesman said that based on intelligence inputs received from unit source about a presence of IED on Shopian-Bahibug road, troops of the Army Unit, carried out a search operation of the areas resulting into the recovery of one cylinder based IED. The IED was planted under the culvert near village Lundura.
The area was immediately cordoned on either side of the road and IED was destroyed by the combined Bomb Disposal Teams of JKP and Army, said the defence spokesman.
