SRINAGAR, Feb 15: People of the Kashmir valley have expressed strong resentment against the clean chit given to faith healer, Gulzar Ahmad Bhat alias Gulzar Pir who was arrested by the police for 'sexual exploitation' of girls.
A group of victims while sharing their views with Early Times said that faith healers like Gulzar Pir enjoy the political patronage. They said that this was the reason that he was set free despite the fact that he was running a 'sex clinic' in the central Kashmir's Budgam district.
"The way the Budgam district court released Gulzar Pir for the reasons of the insufficient proof is an indicative of the fact that the institutions responsible for doing enquiries are playing in the hands of the influential," said the victims.
The victims leveled serious allegations against the enquiry committees for being behind the culprit.
"We have no faith even in the judiciary system of the state following the release of Gulzar Pir despite his involvement in the shameful activities. There is no transparency in the enquiries as conducted from time to time and the release of a faith healer like Gulzar Pir is a living example in this regard.
A victim Salma (name changed) said that there were many eye witnesses, including the victims, who recorded their statements against the faith healer. She questioned as to what more proofs did the enquiry committee want so that Gulzar continues to be behind the bars.
Salma said that Gulzar Pir played with the sentiments of many victims like her who used to tell that enjoying sex with him is the best way of purifying oneself. "We had hoped that his arrest and the subsequent punishment will be a lesson for other such persons, but little did we know that he will be released."
The victims say that faith healer was arrested only as the time buying tactics to cool down the anger of the people because the protests had rocked many parts of Budgam district following the news about the 'sexploitation' of girls.
"The way Gulzar Pir was released speaks volumes about the deliberate attempts of the enquiry agency for not providing proofs in the court against him. It is because of these agencies that the release of the culprit became possible," said parents of a victim. The parents of the victim said that after the release of Gulzar Pir, the people who do the business in the name of the faith healing will feel encouraged without any fear in their minds.
