Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 15: While most of the streets in summer capital provide tough time for the vehicular traffic and pedestrians owing to the mismanagement of authorities the historic Maharaja Bazar has become a hot spot of frequent traffic jams. In absence of any check on part of the authorities, roadside vendors rule the street leaving very little space for vehicular traffic and almost none for the pedestrians. "The road here is very trivial; the vendors have occupied both the road and pedestrian path. The street remains jam packed all the time, there is neither space for the vehicles to move nor for the people who pass by," said Majid Ali while buying vegetables at the market. Surprisingly more and more space is being occupied by the vendors while the authorities have failed to check the menace. The process is said to be the main reason of traffic jams from Amira Kadal to Jahangir Chowk. "It takes 10-15 minutes to move the vehicles from Amira Kadal upto Jahangir Chowk, normally this is journey of only a few seconds. It not only wastes our time but the passengers also get late for their destinations," said Mushtaq Ahmad, a driver.
Ironically, the problem gets intense during festival time as more vendors flow to the market blocking the road. Locals held that they have raised the issue with higher ups several times, but to no avail.
"We went to police, municipal authorities and even to several legislators to highlight this grave issue. Even though they give us assurance of solving the problem, but nothing has been done on practical grounds," said a group of locals. The mushroom growth of the vendors is not only proving detrimental to the traffic movement, but it has also taken toll on the business of shopkeepers here. Local shopkeepers allege that chaotic traffic in the area is the cause of their decline in business. "These vendors remain surrounded by the customers all the time; this is also putting a halt on our business. They are earning well through illegal occupation here while as we are going through tough time," said Muneeb Ahmad, who runs a crockery shop. When contacted SSP Traffic Hasseb-ur-Rehman said, "Since this is the diverted route to keep other essential ways open for vehicular movement, lot of passenger vehicles move on this route creating traffic jams." He attributed the problem to the presence of vendors on the street and not the traffic diversion. "The main problem here is the presence of these vendors. Since we can't act against these vendors it is the duty of R&B, local police and SMC to look into the matter," said SSP. He said that in several meetings the issue was raised with concerned authorities adding that no action has been taken so for.
