Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 15: Resounding victory of Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recently held assembly elections in Delhi has somewhat changed the equation of government in Jammu & Kashmir.
Kejriwal's victory has put Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on a strong wicket as compared to Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) that lost the Delhi elections badly. Following the Delhi defeat, BJP leaders in general and particularly those belonging to the state are pushing for the early formation of government with PDP in the state.
Sources told Early Times that the BJP leaders want their high command to take decision on government formation as soon as possible so that the 'golden chance' is not lost. These BJP leaders fear that their might be a change of heart in the PDP leadership with regard to government formation in state.
"It is an established fact that BJP would never on earth get 25 seats from the Jammu division. As such this is the best chance for the party to form the government in the state. If this chance is lost then people who voted for the party would rebuke them and think twice before voting for BJP in the next assembly elections," said sources.
It has been learnt that majority of the people who voted for BJP in the winter capital of the state are fed up with the lackadaisical approach of the party with respect to government formation. These people opine that BJP should grab the opportunity with both hands and form the government since masses voted for a change in 2014 assembly elections.
"No doubt 2014 assembly elections presented a fractured mandate, but at the same time it has given an opportunity for both PDP and BJP to work for development of Kashmir and Jammu regions respectively. People of Kashmir voted for PDP so that there is some change in the system. Same can be said about the BJP from Jammu division and if both the parties fail to form government then there are bound to be repercussions," said sources.
Sources said that if both PDP and BJP fail to form the government in the state then there are chances that they would have to face the music in the next assembly elections since the same would be imposed on the masses. They said the situation is tricky for BJP since neither National Conference nor Congress is ready to support them for government formation.
"As soon as the election results were out both National Conference and Congress pledged their support to PDP for forming the government in the state. On the other side the BJP has been left alone with nobody ready to support them. This has put the BJP leadership in a quandary and they are in a fix as how to move about in such a demanding situation," said sources.
Sources said that local leadership of BJP has pinned hopes on Prime Minister, Narendra Modi who is likely to have a meeting with PDP Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed over the government formation in the state. These leaders want this to happen at the earliest so that there is an end to the impasse and they can go to people with their heads high.
