Beyond political empty recurring, Devika shrinking fast to insensitivity, neglect | | | Early Times Report
Udhampur, Feb 15: On the eve of yet another Shivratri, Udhampur's lifeline, sacred Devika river is fighting a battle for its own survival against apathy neglect and insensitivity of the administration, political leadership and the people in general. Devika has merely been an elections issue for all political parties which promised to make it pollution free, but ironically, the promises and assurances proved to be nothing more than political empty recurring for garnering votes. According to locals, beside administration and political groups an NGO Davika Sudhar Samiti was also formed to restore the glory of Devika, but that too failed to make a substantive change on ground. Locals added that local Pujari of Davika temple with his personal efforts and small donations received at temple every year took up renovation and beautification of the ancient temple . They added that people had to take dip in polluted water as administration did nothing to clean the kunds . Sarita Devi of Indian Democratic Human Rights Organisation, an NGO said that the ancient and Sacred Davika River was dying due to accumulated pollution caused mainly by sewage wastes coming from residential houses ,T.B hospital, fruit and vegetable markets. As a result, the condition of this holy river had worsened to such an extent that nobody was ready to take a dip in it. She added that political leaders had exploited locals emotionally in the name of Davika in elections but had done nothing to restore its piety and glory. She added that due to political and administrative apathy Water of Devika had high sewage contamination as environmentalist had warned after checking its pollution level few months back . She added that administration to save its skin had issued an order under section order 144 Cr.Pc directing locals desist from putting their septic outlets and garbage in river but there is no implementation of order on ground . NGO member Reema Arora said that crores were spent to keep river pollution free but till date even no drainage system is in place to keep river pollution free . She stressed that an independent enquiry be conducted by vigilance to ascertain the factual utilization of allocated funds . It is pertinent to mention here that as per the report of Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board, the quality of water in Devika is highly contaminated. |
