Let PDP & BJP respect peoples' vote for change
3/26/2015 11:37:20 PM
If people in Jammu and Kashmir had come out
in large numbers for exercising their right of
franchise during the Assembly election they did so because they wanted to vote for change. They wanted to vote for change of guard, change of political combination that would rule the state, change for ensuring regional balance. But judged by the political and security related events that took place in the state during the last over three weeks people seem to have become a bit dismayed over the continuing unease between the BJP and the PDP that share power. In fact the PDP led coalition Government had started its innings on a weak wicket because of the traditional ideological differences between the BJP and the PDP.Still the two made room for accommodating each other in the interest of smooth functioning of the Government. Unfortunately the Government's attention was diverted from concentrating on real problems of people to issues that have no relation with securing additional comforts for the people of the state. In fact delay in carrying out promised relief and rehabilitation of flood affected people continues to irritate a major section of people.Yes,the process of relief and rehabilitation has been started but its movement is slow and that too when a large number of people have been affected.
While Chief Minister,Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, was trying to give a final shape to the rehabilitation scheme of flood hit people his mind got diverted by the terror strikes on Kathua Police station and the Samba Army camp.It was a repeat of 2013 incident but with a marginal difference in the contour of the incident and about the loss of life.In the days when the PDP and the BJP were trying to formulate a policy for sharing power the state was rattled by ceasefire violations by the Pakistani forces which had forced over 5,000 families to flee to safer places on this side of the Internal Border in Jammu sector. It was followed by a flurry in the activities of Kashmiri separatists who seemed to have surfaced following invitation for a tete-tete in the premises of the High Commission in New Delhi.Several senior Hurriyat leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani,Molvi Umar Farooq, Molvi Abbas Ansari, Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, JKLF Chief, Mohd.Yasin Mailk and others travelled to the union capital to be part of the dignitaries who had assembled there in connection with the Pakistan Day.Aisya Andrabi, who was invited to the meeting could not go because of her engagement in Srinagar where she celebrated Pakistan Day and hoisted Pakistani flag for which a case has been filed against her under various provisions of the unlawful activities Act.
Even Masarat Alam, whose release had set the river Chenab on fire, had been invited by Abdul Basit but he failed to be present because he was down with flu.Despite the fact that these interactions between the separatists and Pakistan Commissioner had triggered a political storm in the union capital statements from these Hurriyat leaders and from Abdul Basit added fuel to fire. This way Mufti Sayeed was forced to be on the back foot when a few days ago he had pleaded for resumption of the process of dialogue between India and Pakistan for resolving various issues. He had stated that for ensuring peace in the region the issue of Kashmir needed to be settled peacefully.Whether the controversy over meetings between the separatists and Pakistan High Commissioner was called for is not as important as the fallout of the incident on peace in the state which continues to hang by a thin thread. Well these developments could be trated as part of the teething problems of the ruling coalition Government. But the PDP and BJP coalition Government is sup- posed to learn a lesson or two from these developments and incidents and instead of getting bogged down by these events it would be better for the two to forget about their ideological differences and remain engaged in resolving various problems of people of the state.
The two partners in power should not bank on depleted opposition because if not the Congress the National Conference has potential for committing a mischief. Let the PDP and the BJP revise their schedule of working so that people have no regrets for having vote in favour of change. And the top leaders of PDP and the BJP should know that the state of Jammu and Kashmir cannot afford the luxury of going to the polls again nor can the BJP and PDP expect to improve their performance in case the st ate went for a fresh election.
