Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 26: Even though Jammu and Kashmir State has won the best state award in health sector two times during National Conference led coalition government but the facts on the ground is totally different which paints the murky picture of previous dispensation. According to Economic Survey report 2014-15 of Jammu and Kashmir, there is only one doctor over 2114 patient which is insufficient against the recommended norm of World Health Organization (WHO) of one doctor over 1000 patients. "However the number of medical institutions has increased considerably over the years from 124 to 5532 (1950-2014) but still there huge dearth of doctors across the state as the doctor-patient ratio in the state is 1:2114 which is more than doubled against the proposed norm of WHO of 1:1000," Survey report says. Survey report says, the dependence of people per medical institution is still very high. The health infrastructure in the state at all levels suffers from shortages that are both qualitative as well as quantitative in nature. The previous government led by Omar Abdullah used to blow its trumpet by counting its achievement in health sector after getting best state awards in health sector during its public speeches but factually it turned down its eyes on the ground situation in the health sector which had been remain ill due to shortage of doctors, sources said.
While public health facilities are reasonably well developed in urban areas but there is inadequate development of health infrastructure in rural and remote areas of the State. This puts a lot of pressure on urban areas. The health infrastructure in rural areas needs to be augmented, report says. "Even the Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu and its associated hospitals, which witness huge crowds are short of doctors.
The successive government has miserably failed to strengthen the health sector," sources said.
