Srinagar, Mar 26: National Conference is a strange party! It can oppose or support anyone. National Conference behaving strangely was once again evident earlier this week in the Legislative Assembly when one of its legislators Javed Rana abused the speaker and BJP leader Kavinder Gupta and called him "Hindu Speaker."
Someone needs to remind the National Conference that it supported Gupta when he contested the elections for Mayorship of the Jammu Municipal Corporation. It's an open secret that a senior NC leader from Jammu region was instrumental in ensuring Gupta's win. At that point of time NC found no harm in supporting the BJP candidate whom one of its senior leaders called "Hindu Speaker."
Analysts believe that NC after losing power has lost the way also. "NC leaders are running short of ideas about how to behave in the house and what to talk," he added.
Javed Rana by launching a scathing attack on Gupta tried to polarize the House and address his constituency. "These are cheap tactics and are uncalled for. Legislators are representatives of the people and religion has got no role to play when it comes to working for the welfare of the masses," the analyst added.
While recalling the tenure of the present NC working President Omar Abdullah as junior minister in BJP led NDA government at centre, the analyst said: "Why didn't NC leaders stop Omar from being a part of the BJP government when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. Out of power NC has started talking about Hindu and Muslim. Isn't it strange?" the analyst asked.
He said soon after the assembly elections ended in JK, Omar rushed to Delhi to forge an alliance with BJP but his efforts failed to materialize. "When religion was no bar when you (NC) were talking about joining hands with BJP then how come it has suddenly become an impediment now?" the analyst asked.
There is no doubt about the fact that NC has lost the ground and now it wants to polarize the state by raising Hindu-Muslim discourse. One can expect many more stunts from the party leaders in the coming days as they are finding it hard to live without power. PDP and BJP having more than 55 seats together has made the NC leadership believe that there is no chance of they coming back to power for at least next six years.
Pertinently, NC leader Javed Rana had abused the speaker in the assembly earlier this week. His remarks had triggered uproar in the Legislative Assembly (LA), the members from both treasury benches and the opposition had strongly condemned the "Hindu Speaker" remarks which were made NC leader Javed Rana in the house.
Rana on Tuesday in the Assembly had said, "I am denied time to speak. I have not been allowed in the House to speak on Governor's address and now on Budget. I am discriminated against. You are biased because of being Hindu."
The Speaker had said he has allotted time to all the parties and he should talk to his party leader.
