AIIMS row

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 25: It may appear unbelievable, but it has happened. Former Sadar-e-Riyasat and senior Congress Karan Singh's son, Vikramaditya Singh, who was recently nominated to legislative council by the PDP on Friday surprised many by appreciating the Jammu bandh and the role of the CII, the Congress and the NC in what Jammu province witnessed against the local BJP leadership, BJP-led NDA Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vikramaditya not only justified the demand in Jammu for AIIMS-like institute, but also said that Jammu was in desperate need for better medical facilities.
"Jammu is in desperate need for better medical facilities and, therefore, the Central Government should look at an AIIMS like medical institute for this region in addition to setting up of an AIIMS in Srinagar," he said in a statement, which also said that Vikramaditya "has full confidence and faith in the leadership of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who will take up the issue with the Central Government in expediting a medical institute for Jammu region".
However, the most significant part of his statement was the good words the PDP MLC used for the Congress and the NC.
"Today's Jammu Bandh in response to AIIMS being allocated for Kashmir, called by the National Conference, Congress Party and Chambers of Commerce raises a pertinent issue of lack of healthcare services in the Jammu region," said, and added that "attempts in the past to establish medical institutes such as the Super Specialty Hospital were well intentioned but the institute lacks follow up and maintenance as is seen with the shortfall and absence of medical staff, doctors and infrastructure".
It needs to be underlined that it was the Panthers Party that gave the call for Jammu bandhi. Later on, the CII, the JKHCBA, the NC, the Congress, the Shiv Sena, the VHP, the Bajrang Dal, the Jammu State Morcha, the Jammu Pradesh United Front and a number of student and social organizations supported the bandh call.
Yesterday's bandh became a massive affair because everyone in Jammu province, barring the BJP, was supporting the Jammu cause and condemning the BJP and its leadership saying it was a party "gadars" traitors.
That Vikramaditya supported the Jammu bandh and appreciated the role of those who made it a great success could be considered a positive intervention.
