MENDHAR, May 01
Police resorted to firing in the air after tension gripped Dhargloon near here tonight following violent protests by people over the alleged murder of a man. They also stoned the police personnel and broke the officials vehicles of SDPO, Mendhar, and the SHO concerned.
Quoting family members, police sources said two youth forcibly entered the house of Mohammad Rafiq (54), son of Fakkar Din, at Dhargloon late last night and started misbehaving with his two young daughters.
The girls, however, fled finding an opportunity. Sources said when they returned home after an hour or so, the two youth had already left.
They then searched for their father but could not find him. The worried girls then went to the house of their uncle who lived nearby and narrated him the whole incident.
Sources said accompanied by their uncle and his family members, the girls searched for their father in the village and its periphery but could not find any trace of him. While looking for him in the village forests this morning, they found him lying unconscious on a rock. A bottle of poison was lying beside him. His hands and feet were found tied with a rope.
While Rafiq was shifted to Dhargloon PHC, the locals blocked the Mendhar road at Dhargloon from 8 am to 11 am, demanding the arrest of the accused.
From the PHC, Rafiq was referred to district hospital, Rajouri, where he died. As the news of his death reached Dhargloon, locals again gathered on the Mendhar road and blocked it to vehicular traffic. The body was also placed in the middle of the road.
The protesters claimed that before he died, he had given a statement to police and identified both the accused. They said they would not lift their dharna till the accused were arrested and a murder case was registered against them.
It was at about 9 pm when the agitated people stoned and chased away the police personnel who were on the spot to pacify them. After the police personnel tried to regroup themselves, the protesters broke the glasspanes of the vehicles of Mendhar SDPO Surinder Choudhary and the SHO concerned. Police fired one or two shots in the air to keep the demonstrators away, sources claimed.
Reinforcements were being rushed to the spot to pacify the demonstrators. The protest was continuing till late tonight. Sources said Gursai police had initiated inquest proceedings in the case under section 174 of CrPC.
Quoting the girls, police said the two alleged accused were armed with sharp-edged weapons when they had entered their house.
