PJF leads demonstration against GREF for poor road connectivity

Rajouri, May 29: Inhabitants of Thanamandi town, various political party leaders, social activists, members of various NGOs under the banner of People's Joint Front (PJF) held a mass protest demonstration at Thanamandi against the GREF authorities and stopped vehicular traffic on Rajouri-Bafliaz-Mughal road for more than two hours from 2.30 pm.
Locals assembled to register their resentment about the worst condition of Rajouri-Thanamndi-Bafliaz road for the last many days but no authority came forward to repair this most deplorable road.
Amid slogans against Chief Engineer (GREF) and local GREF officials, the Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din, Beopar Mandal president who led the protesters alleged that GREF authorities utterly have failed to maintain link roads connecting to historic Mughal road.
Protestors said that they have been demanding to declare this road (Rajouri to Bafliaz) as Mughal road and immediate widening and repairing of this stretch. Apart from this People also protested against inadequate staff including doctors at Community Health Centre (CHC) at Thanamnandi.
People warned the GREF authorities, tehsil and district administration to start repairing work on this road before June 12, failing so they will organize a large scale protest demonstration Rafiq Mughal,tehsildar along with Iftikhar Talib,SDPO rushed to the spot, pacified the protesters assuring them that their demands will soon be sent to concerned authorities (10.06 cft), beside 15 Kail scants (37.24 cft) in nearby house owned by Karamatullah Nehru also resident of Nehru Chowk Doda," a forest official said. He said, "During questioning, no proper documents in support of genuineness of the lot timber was produced by the accused and accordingly the timber was seized under section 6 and 26/FA.
"After seizure of illegal timber, the forest department has registerred a case under the provision of Forest Act against the accused persons, beside the confiscation proceeding in the forum of Authorized Officer was also initiated against the accused," he added.
Pertinent to mention that on the direction of Minister for Forest, the forest department has launched a massive drive against timber smugglers and also eviction of Forest land illegally occupied by the people and so far as it has retrieved 101 kanal of Forest land in Sirak/Kuntwara area of Thakrie range of Doda Division.
