Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, June 6: Admitting while completing the formalities for obtaining the passport that he is an Indian, the popularity graph of Syed Ali Shah Geelani has come down over the night among the separatist ranks.
Most of the supporters of the Geelani argue that as to what compelled him to beg for the passport. These people say that there are a number of people who have been denied the passport by the authorities for being against the establishment. "What will Geelani say to the people who also want to see their near and dear ones, displaced during the unrest of last twenty five years? Geelani's quest for the passport will draw a reaction not only from the general masses but from his associates as well," said Muneer Ahmad from Budgam.
Muneer firmly believes that the request made by the hardliner for the passport reflects his deviation from the stand which he has been advocating for the whole of his life. If the hardliner manages to get the passport, then it becomes the right of every person who has been denied this travel document, said Muneer.
People of the valley, particularly the active supporters of Geelani fail to understand as to what made the Hurriyat hardliner so much desperate for the passport. These supporters of the Hurriyat say that if a leader like Geelani cannot resist the temptation of meeting with his relatives, then what about the ordinary people. "A relative of mine died in Muzzarfarabad but we could neither bring his body back nor could we perform his last rites. At that time we were pacified by the pro-freedom leaders to have patience for not having seen our relative. As a leader, Geelani also should have controlled his emotions," said waqar Ahmad (name changed) from Srinagar. Waqar said that he had firm belief that if Geelani manages to get the travel documents and flies away then it will be all over for him. It is going to change the mind set of every Kashmiri, said Waqar. There is one more perception among the people who say Geelani had in the mind that during the PDP rule he can easily carry his programmes forward. But little did Geelani know that BJP meant business this time, which is providing no room for his activities, say some people. This could be other reason, as these people say, why Geelani applied for the passport.
