JK loses food grains to poor storage, transportation | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 18: Lack of adequate transportation and storage facilities have cost the state dearly...this time ineffective storage of grains have sent crores down the drain and made Jammu Kashmir the second highest state to waste food grains. In response to a Right to Information query, Food Corporation of India has revealed there was a loss A RTI has brought shocking information to the fore. Around 6,120 tonnes of grains were wasted during 2014-2015 in the state. Documents in possession of early times reflect the state's failure to ensure proper storage of the grains. Keeping the weather in the hilly states of Jammu Kashmir and the North east in view, the FCI had recommended storage capacity of three months . During 2014-2015, the state could only create a capacity of 16,000 metric tonnes against the set target of a lakh MTS. Under the rivate Entrepreneurs Guarantee Scheme for construction of godowns, the state has only completed 41 percent of the works and taken over only 82 percent of the constructed capacity. The state has a sanctioned capacity of 2,84,010 metric tonnes under PEG scheme but only 92,500 of the target was achieved at the end of previous year. While most of the godowns are still under construction, the state has only taken over a capacity of 69,170MTs. Apart from godowns, the grains were lost due to poor transportation. The lost grains due to transportation were 4.33 crores in the state last year upto November. With loss of agricultural land in the state, the imports have increased by 76 percent increase in imports during 2002-2010 in the state. |
