Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 18: Expressing concern over the misuse of the religious places by some political personalities, All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) said members of the different religious communities should ensure that religious places are used for religion only without any political interference. In a statement, APSCC Chairman, Jagmohan Singh Raina said that in the past political parties have been found indulging in religious affairs. He said that some of the politicians have misused the religious places of Muslims, Sikhs or Hindus in the state. He appealed the general public to keep religious places away from political interference.
Referring to the forthcoming GurudwaraPrabandhak Committee elections in the state the APSCC Chairman said that the delay of 11 years in holding these elections has created indiscipline in the affairs of the various Gurdwaras. He said the delay has also led to the mockery of Gurudwara Endowment Act.
"The role of Gurudwara Management committee is defined to manage gurudwara affairs, but the elected people indulge in political affairs of different parties by bringing various leaders to gurudwara for political lectures which makes the pious religious place into a political platform. By and large the religious devotees condemn such acts and convey their displeasure as well," said Raina.
He said that Sikhs in the past have fought battles to free Gurudwara affairs from Mahants who forcefully occupied Gurudwaras due to their vested interests. He said a similar situation arises when some people do not want to leave the management of Gurudwaras with the same being viewed seriously by the community members.
Showing resentment over the new district formation the APSCC has said that this has created problem in making 11 constituencies out of the thin Sikh population as per the governance of Gurudwara Endowment Act. APSCC leaders like Ajit Singh Mastana, Sant Singh, Principal Niranjan Singh and others have been demanding the amendment in the Gurudwara Act to suit the present making of Sikh constituencies as per the Act.
"In many new districts it has not been decided to make the GPC constituencies proportionate to the population of Sikhs which resulted the failure of administration to give right to vote in the districts like Shopian, Ganderbal and Kulgam. The government in the past has never adhered to this demand raised by members of Sikh community," he added.
He appealed the members of his community to nominate and elect only those people who not only believe in themselves but also have inclination to serve the management of Gurudwaras purely religiously, that will make the Gurudwaras a place of worship only. He said the selection of candidates for elections in respective constituencies of the districts should be for a religious purpose and not political one.
"Sikhs are availing this opportunity after 11 years. The period of delay was unnecessarily extended by certain unscrupulous elements which played to the tune of a certain political party and their interference diluted management of Gurudwaras in the past," he said.
