Early Times Report
RAJOURI, July 22: Though BJP has given a clean chit to Rajouri district administration in containing situation and saving it from taking an ugly turn, locals here have accused the administration of its total failure in maintaining peace and taking care of the circumstances that ultimately led to imposition of curfew.
The BJP chief spokesperson in a press conference today gave a clean chit to the Rajouri district administration, saying its timely action saved the situation from deteriorating further.
The common masses, however, hold the view that had the pre-emptive measures been taken by administration soon after the tension started over the torching of the alleged ISIS flags, the situation could have been saved from taking a serious turn and the administration would have not been forced to impose the curfew in the border town.
The administration which earlier held talks with the leaders and prominent persons from all walks of life also sought apology from the youth who had torched the flag. After the youth's apology showing innocence about the same, the leaders agreed that they will not allow the situation to go out of control but work for peace and amity to prevail in the town. But soon after the meeting concluded, some disgruntled elements were still on protest at Gujjar Mandi and other places, demanding arrest of those who torched the flag.
As the elderly persons were on the way to pacify the agitating youth, the police used force against them and arrested them, said a trader, adding that this had provoked the people.
He said had the administration maintained a restraint and sought the help of prominent citizens in pacifying the agitated youth not to take a rigid stand, the issue would have been resolved amicably with the help of administration and the situation could have been different. But this did not happen unfortunately, he added.
A social activist from Rajouri, said after the youth sought apology saying that they were not knowing that the burning of the flag would hurt the sentiments of the people. This pacified the otherwise angered people of the district.
But the Rajouri police failed in its duty and instead of pacifying the youth it took harsh steps and arrested them. This provoked people. However, sources said people had now agreed to play a positive role in restoration of peace in the town as well as adjoining areas.
