SRINAGAR, July 22: Thousands of injections procured by the authorities of Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura for treatment of swine flu patients have either expired or all set to get expired since the same were not used at the time they were needed the most in the Kashmir valley.
Medical Superintendent SKIMS-Soura had shot a letter to Director Health Services Kashmir, Dr. Sameer Matoo last month asking him to utilize the injections H1N1 vaccines that were going to expire in June and July last year. As more than a month has passed since then there are reports that many of the vaccines have already expired.
"Kindly utilize 3000 PFS of Injection H1N1 vaccines at your end which are going to expire in the month of June and July 2015. The vaccines were purchased during the swine flu pandemic," wrote Medical Superintendent SKIMS under correspondence number SMS 211/04/2015-610 dated 19-06-2015.
Sources said that since the letter was shot during the middle of June this year many of the vaccines have expired with no responsibility being fixed on the concerned stakeholders. They said the health ministry officials have so far failed to act against the people who have in real sense played with the lives of people.
"The SKIMS authorities have virtually undermined the significance of the vaccines which were in great demand as the Swine Flu assumed the proportions of pandemic after the September 2014 flood. Many people who were affected by the flu could not get the treatment since the vaccines were not available," said sources.
Sources said that if vaccines would have been utilized on right time and right occasion lives of people who died due to swine flu could have been saved. They said the SKIMS authorities adopted a care free approach and did not act on time to save the lives of people affected by swine flu pandemic.
"A full-fledged enquiry should be ordered in the matter so that the truth comes out and necessary action is taken against the guilty. This would lead to a situation where the responsibility would be fixed on the concerned officials. This would act as a deterrent as well and as such things would not be repeated in the future," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that at least 10 persons lost their lives in the state due to the swine flu. The SKIMS hospital authorities came under severe criticism from the people after they failed to put in place the necessary infrastructure with regard to treatment of swine flu patients. SKIMS Director Dr. Showkat Ali Zargar was forced to convene a press conference in February 2015 when the swine flu was at peak across the state and he claimed that everything is in control which was not the case.
