Jammu revolts against 'ungrateful' BJP
AIIMS row
7/23/2015 12:31:48 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 22: The failure of the ungrateful BJP to deliver is written promise on All-India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) on the committed date has evoked a very sharp reaction from Jammu region. The AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC), which had been spearheading the movement for establishing AIIMS in Jammu since May 19, on Tuesday not only restarted chain hunger strike but also threatened long-drawn mass movement across Jammu region.
The chairman of AIIMS CC and president JKHBAJ, Abhinav Sharma described the behaviour of BJP leadership of the state as well as of the Center as the betrayal of the people of Jammu. "It is a classical example of treachery of those who in 2014 pinned full faith in the BJP hoping that it would reverse the hegemonic politics imposed on Jammu Province," he said, and added that the "inability of the BJP leadership to fulfill their written commitment to the Coordination Committee of getting a formal announcement pertaining to the establishment of AIIMS in Jammu from its own BJP led NDA Government as a unique example of walking away…It is for the first time in the political history of the country that any political party in such a brazen manner breached the trust of the people who voted them to power. Now we will not talk to anyone. Our only goal is AIIMS for Jammu. We will achieve it at whatever cost and the AIIMS CC enjoys unstinted popular support in the entire Jammu region," said Abhinav Sharma while addressing the large gathering at the venue of chain hunger strike. Not only this, he appealed to the people of Jammu region "to get prepared for a long drawn mass movement to correct the situation in the extremely discriminated Jammu Province," adding that "they have also warned the biased and vindictive authorities of serious consequences of spurning the peaceful attitude of the Coordination Committee and…that henceforth the AIIMS CC will not be responsible for any untoward incident in the region". "The BJP's betrayal of Jammu will bring its downfall," he, in addition, said.
On the other hand, the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), which is also part of the ACC, threatened an indefinite bandh after July 30 in case AIIMS is not announced by that date. "It was unanimously decided that the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is an important constituent of Coordination Committee, shall not believe or have faith in any further commitment whether oral or written by the Dy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and adopt a course of aggressive agitation for the rights of people of Jammu province. In consultation with the office bearers and the representatives of all the bazars, traders, transporters and industrial associations, it has been decided that if the sanction for AIIMS at Jammu from the appropriate authority of Government of India is not received on or before July 30, then we shall be left with no option but to call for an indefinite Jammu Bandh…The state BJP under the leadership of Dr Singh has failed to honour his written commitment to the AIIMS Coordination Committee for getting the sanction of AIIMS for Jammu from an appropriate and authorized authority from Government of India on or before July 20," Rakesh Gupta, president CCI, told reporters after the CCI meeting ended.
The JKNPP under the leadership of its chairman and former minister Harsh Dev Singh, not only held a protest demonstration against the BJP for what it called can act of betrayal, but also threatened a full-scale movement against the BJP. Describing the BJP for once again carrying on the legacy of playing foul with the people of Jammu, Harsh Dev sought an immediate resignation of both Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh and Minister for Social Welfare, Forest and Ecology and Environment Bali Bhagat, besides the public apology from them for playing with the esteem and honour of the people who had overwhelmingly voted them to power.
He also expressed shock and resentment over the Saffron party for what he called "making a treacherous mockery of the aspirations of the people of Jammu region raised slogans". Significantly, many Panthers under the leadership of Harsh Dev Singh also visited the venue of the ACC-sponsored hunger strike to express their solidarity with the people of Jammu region.
The Dogra Front and Shiv Sena (DFSS) also didn't lag behind. It started what it called its "second phase of agitation" for forcing the State and Central governments to announce an AIIMS for Jammu. Not just this, the DFSS protestors also gheraoed Speaker of Legislative Assembly, Kavinder Gupta, at Canal Road, near Regional Research Laboratory for not fulfilling the demand of AIIMS for Jammu and forced him to come out of his car. The frightened Speaker held out a promise that "he will resign as MLA and Speaker of the House if AIIMS is not allotted to Jammu within 15 days".
Besides, the ACC, the CCI, the JKNPP and the DFSS, a number of Congress leaders and youth Congress workers also protested against the BJP and its leadership and charged it of betraying the cause of Jammu and going back on its written commitment. More importantly, the Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association (JKHCBA), Jammu, held an emergency meeting to review the situation arising out of the politics of deceit indulged in by the BJP and decided to hold general body meeting on Thursday.
All this suggest that the BJP is in for a bigger trouble in a region which brought it to power for the first time in 67 years. There is still time for the BJP to avert the impending indefinite bandh and it could avert it only if it announces an AIIMS for Jammu within this week.
