Early Times Report

Kathua, July 28: Hundreds of Kanals of Irrigation land between Lakhanpur to Flote area has been allegedly encroached by land grabbers ironically under the nose of Irrigation officials who enjoyed Irrigation Minister Sukhnandan Choudhary's blessings just act like mute spectators and apparently have failed to take action against land mafia which grabbed irrigation lands worth crores.
Locals resented that concerned minister and team of irrigation officials pay frequent visits just to make TA/DA every time but no action has been taken against any of encroachers who grabbed irrigation lands worth crores till date.
Despite during his recent visit the irrigation minister assured to take action against land grabbers in a public meeting at Lakhanpur during reviewing arrangement for Amarnath pilgrims but his assurances go in air.
It is relevant to mention here that when anybody tries to ask concerned officials about the reason of delay in action, they adopt a dilly dallying tactics.
Most of the land from Lakhanpur to Saar Khad and at spots from Saar Khad to Flote Mahi Chak, D 3, Main Canal, Old BP Canal, Kashmir Cannel and many other canals the embankments of the canals have been grabbed by the businessmen who establish business in Lakhanpur, religious places not to talk of private properties even the Government Garages and its Workshop, District Employment & Counseling Centre, PHE Department building were seen on these embankments
"Despite knowing facts about such encroachments nothing has been done by Irrigation department to take action against the grabbers, locals alleged.
They said that though land speared of 55 ft left and 55 ft right side from the centre of the Old BP Canal belongs to Irrigation department but many illegal structures erected illegally by influential land grabbers.
A civil society member said that anybody found encroaching the irrigation land shall be prosecuted under the provision of J&K Water resource & Management Act. 2010.
"But it seems that the hoarding was installed only as a showcasing as not single feet of the irrigation land is left open.
Locals now are looking towards higher ups to take necessary action against such corrupt officers and even the minister who are covertly encouraging land grabbers by their inaction.
