early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 26: Doctors in Kashmir Valley are up in arms against private practice and have termed it root cause of all mess in government run hospitals in the State as well as rising corruption and nepotism in Health and Medical Education Department. The doctors in Kashmir Valley have taken a lead in opposing the private practice for government doctors in the State and demanded a blanket ban on the same for the overall interest of thousands of patients Doctors. Association Kashmir (DAK) today said that private practice by government doctors particularly in teaching hospitals is unethical as this business of medicine takes heavy toll on patients. According to sources the private practice of doctors has put the patents to lot of trouble in hospitals as senior doctors intentionally shirk to examine patients to flourish private practice and fleece them at their clinics. This has in turn led to nepotism and corruption in the Department, sources added. Sources said in absence of the senior doctors in Government hospitals junior doctors are put to lot of pressure and sometimes they can't diagnose a patient properly due to lack of experience and need the guidance of a senior doctor who hardly bother to examine the patients. This has led to attendant doctor clash in hospitals also and sometimes resulted not the public anger and agitation. Such case are often reported in the hospitals and on many occasions the junior doctors have to face the wrath of people, sources said. Perturbed over such behavior of senior doctors and stoic silence made by the Government the junior doctors are demanding blanket ban on private practice of doctors in the State and in case any body is found doing the same he should be dealt under law.
But unfortunately the State Government and Health and Medical Education Department is totally sleeping over the issue which has been cause of concern for both junior doctors as well as public. Reiterating its demand regarding ban on private practice President Doctors Association Kashmir Dr Nisar ul Hassan today said that private practice by doctors in tertiary care hospitals is responsible for high mortality among patients. During emergency hours when the services of senior doctors are needed most, patients are left to the mercy of trainees thus jeopardizing the lives of critically ill patients, he added.
He said patients in accident and emergency departments are seen by students who are at learning stage and majority of patients die either due to misdiagnosis or delayed intervention due to non availability of senior doctors who are busy in their private clinics. It is the timely intervention that decides the life and death of a critically sick patient, he added. Patients are referred to tertiary care hospitals to receive services of faculty but they end up being seen by students. How can a student help a patient with heart attack who comes to tertiary care for emergency angioplasty but instead receives dispensary treatment due to non availability of senior doctors and these patients either die or remain morbid for rest of their lives?
There is no provision of private practice in teaching hospitals where doctors have to be full time available as they have a huge responsibility of teaching and research besides patient care. If a doctor entertains huge number of patients in morning and evening at his/her private clinic with tired mind what justice he can deliver to patients at hospitals. Patients have to wait for ages for procedures and surgeries because of dual practice by doctors and they are forced to go to private clinics. The rulers of health care should draw an uncrossable line between private and public medicine and doctors should choose one sector as they cannot work on both sides of the divide.
