Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 26: Due to lack of coordination between administration of Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, and its mechanical wing, the incinerators in the SMGS Hospital and Chest Disease Hospital would have to wait more for functional incinerators. Moreover, GMCH and its associated hospitals have depend on an incinerator which has been setup in the premises of GMC hospital Jammu for treating bio medical waste of hospital but owing to overburden it also functions occasionally.
"Nearly seven months have passed but the incinerators are yet to be started. This indicates non-seriousness of the higher authorities in the Health Department," sources told Early Times.
They said the hospitals have to send their bio-medical waste to GMC hospital. Incidentally, the incinerator in the GMC hospital is out of order for the past few weeks. This has lead to accumulation of mounds of garbage which includes dangerous bio-medical waste. "The risk of infection always looms around the hospitals if the bio-medical waste is not treated on time," sources said.
They further said the problems come every two month and higher ups in the department were informed timely but nothing has been done in this regard, exposing tall claims of Health Department that boasts of medical and related facilities in the hospitals of Jammu province.
Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent of SMGS hospital said the incinerator was yet to be handed over by the mechanical wing of GMCH, Jammu, even after seven months. When contacted, chief Engineer of the mechanical wing of GMC hospital, HS Chibber said the work on incinerators in the aforesaid hospitals has been completed but the cumbersome procedure is coming in the way.
"As soon as the formalities would be completed, the incinerators would be handed over to the authorities of these two hospitals," Chibber said.
