Declare victims of cross border shelling as martyrs: Rahul

Rajouri, Aug 26: The vice president of AICC, Rahul Gndhi Wednesday urged the union government to declare victims of cross border shelling as martyrs. He was interacting with the families of victims at Balakote in Poonch. Rahul is on athree day tour of he state.
Rahul said the government must release compensation to the victims at par with militancy related incidents/ security forces person killed in Pakistani firing/shelling.
"This demand of the victims is valid and genuine and government of India should take an appropriate action in this matter" said Rahul .
Rahul accompanied by Ambika Soni ,in-charge J&K affairs and PCC president Ghulam Ahmed Mir reached Balakot at about 11 am and after 45 minutes left for Jammu to attend his further engagements.
"I am here to meet the cross border firing victims and their family members and to get feedback from them about the problems they are facing especially during firing/shelling from across the border" said Rahul Gandhi.
About 250 inhabitants including about 30 firing/shelling victims from forward villages including Basooni, Sandot,Darati, Dabbi , Panjani, Sohala situated between Line of Control (LoC) and Cobra Fence in Poonch were present on the venue to interact with Rahul Gandhi.
The main demands which were raised before Rahul Gandhi by the inhabitant of border villages include compensation for the victims as par with militancy related victims i.e Rs 5 lakh instead of Rs one lakh at present.
Another demand was Life insurance for the inhabitants and insurance of their property, live stock and crops and construction of bunkers so that they can save their lives in case of any eventuality from across the border.
"As for as construction of the bunkers was consider it was our long pending demand and the matter was taken with the concerned authorities several times but their casual approach costs our 6 precious lives this time", said Mohd Riaz a victim.
Construction of link roads for quick rescue of the firing victims was another demand of the inhabitants of border villages as they alleged that removing the victims on beds or on sholders consume more time and become risky for those who carry the victims.
"I am here to meet you and share your pain and grief of losing your near ones" said Rahul Gandhi. He was interacting wit 15 years old Mohd Rameez s/o Mohd Aziz who was critically injured and his 18 years old brother Mohd Amin was killed in Pakistan shelling on August 15.
He also interacted with family members of 52-year-old Karamat Hussain Khan sarpanch of Basooni village who was also killed in the shelling on the same day when a Pakistani shell fell on his car while rushing to save other villages.
Rahul Gandhi assured all the firing victims of all possible helpand as for as the demands of the firing/shelling victims were concerned Rahul Gandhi said, "The demands of the people are genuine and needs immediate attention of the Union Government".
He added People here are very worried, very scared .They are asking for three things..one is proper compensation for victims of this firing, life insurance and insurance for their live stocks, crops & property and construction of shelter camps (bunkers) to protect themselves in case heavy shelling from across the border" said Rahul Gandhi.
He added they (firing victims) say when someone is killed in terror attack, he get more compensation (about 5 lakh) and those killed by Pakistani shelling get less compensation (one lakh).
"They also stands for (get killed in Pakistan shelling/firing) for the country and should also be consider 'Martyrs' and their demand for more compensation is valid and government of India should do something about this" said Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi had also visited first aid centre established at Bhimber Gali (BG) for the pilgrims of Budh Amarnath yatra under the supervision of Parvaiz Ahmed Khan,BMO, Mendhar.
Rahul interacted with the BMO and doctorss on duty and appreciated the initiative of Health Department of Poonch district.
