Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 26: Burnhall School which is one of the prestigious schools in Srinagar is paying Rs 3242 (Three thousand two hundred and forty two only) as annual rent towards the Government for 32 kanals of land which has been leased out to this school way back in 1971.
The Irony is that the rent has not been enhanced for the last 45 years. This information was provided by the office of Assistant Commissioner Nazool Srinagar to Umar Javaid a Right to Information Activist from Srinagar . This information is similar to that of Presentation Convent school about which Early Times filed a detailed story on Tuesday. This has exposed the Government and Burnhall School nexus . The information reveals that Burnhall School is in possession of 32 kanals and 8 marlas of state land at Ram Munshi Bagh area of Srinagar which is a very posh area located just adjacent to Sher e Kashmir Cricket Stadium.
"The market value of the land in this area as on date is said to be not less than 10 crores per kanal. One can understand how the Government is causing serious loss to the state exchequer ?" said Umar Javaid.
Umar argues that Burnhall School is not at all a Non Profit Organisation as students in this school are charged very huge fees. He along with his associates are working hard to bring all the schools having being provided large chunk of land by Govt under the ambit of Right to Information Act (RTI).
Pertinent to mention that a prominent missionary schools Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson school Sheikh Bagh Srinagar Presentation Convent School Rajbagh Srinagar have also been leased out around 85 and 90 kanals of state land respectively and the managements of these schools hardly provide free education to poor and students from downtrodden families.
Umar Javaid a senior member of Jammu Kashmir RTI Movement and its Programme Coordinator for Srinagar is fighting a legal battle with these schools and the case is pending before State Information Commission (SIC) which will be giving its judgment very soon on the issue of bringing these institutions under the ambit of RTI. If the SIC's judgment goes in favour of Umar Javaid , then all the aforementioned schools will have to provide all the information about funds , appointments , admissions , to the citizens under State RTI Act.
