No international support to Pak on Kashmir
Good news from Washington

Early Times Report
jammu, Sept 2: Good news today emanated from Washington (US). It said Pakistan "no longer enjoys international support" on Kashmir and that it is unlikely to get an approval for a referendum in the region from the UN Security Council. The report was based on the input from Husain Haqqani, a former Pakistani envoy to the US. "Kashmir is an emotive issue in Pakistan because of the failure of its leaders to inform their people that Pakistan no longer enjoys international support on the matter," Husain Haqqani, former Pakistani Ambassador to the US, was quoted as saying. Haqqani was at the "loggerheads" with the powerful Pakistani Army when in office.
Haqqani is at present Director of South and Central Asia at the Hudson Institute, a US-think tank. He said for decades Pakistan has sought international support for its stand on Jammu & Kashmir that its future "must be resolved through dialogue with India and a plebiscite among the Kashmiri people". "India does not even want to discuss the dispute without the end of Pakistan-sponsored terror," he added. He also claimed that "what most Pakistanis do not know is that the last United Nations Security Council resolution on Kashmir was passed in 1957 and Pakistan could not win support for a referendum in Kashmir today if it asked for a new vote at the United Nations". "Instead of accepting that it might be better for India and Pakistan to normalize relations by expanding trade and cross-border travel, Pakistani hardliners have stuck to a 'Kashmir-first' mantra, which they know is unrealistic," Haqqani further said.
Haqqani has asserted that "posturing on Kashmir gets Pakistan nowhere but its leaders feel they need to do it any way to maintain support from Islamists and the military at home" and suggested that "hardliners in an increasingly self-confident India play on Indians' frustration with Pakistani state support for jihadis, such as those responsible for terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 2008".
Now that Haqqani, who know much about Pakistan, Pakistani leadership and the Pakistani Army, has put things in perspective, it is time our foreign office put pressure on the international community to further isolate Pakistan. It should fight its case on Jammu & Kashmir. For, it has everything to gain because the India's case on Jammu & Kashmir is very strong. Even the UN resolutions endorse the Indian stand on the state.
Meanwhile, the US has also has said it is for India and Pakistan to reduce tensions between them and decide on their relationship, ruling out any role for itself in the revival of Indo-Pak dialogue. "About relations (between India and Pakistan, that's really a matter between the two countries. But we certainly want to see reduction in tensions between India and Pakistan," State Department Spokesman Mark Toner said yesterday. This report further vindicates the Indian stand that Jammu & Kashmir is a bilateral, and not a trilateral, issue between Indian and Pakistan. What India needs to tell the internal community in clear terms is that PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan are legitimately Indian and that it must put pressure on Pakistan so that these areas are reintegrated with India.
