Govt to provide Rs 67.47 cr for NIFT's permanent campus

Srinagar, Oct 2: Government has formally set into motion the process to establish a permanent campus of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) here and informed the Centre that it will provide Rs 67.47 crore as the state's share for the project.
On Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's initiative, the state government has conveyed its commitment to the Union Ministry of Textiles to provide Rs 67.47 crore as the state's share for the Rs 325.36 crore NIFT project, an official spokesperson said today.
On the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre has agreed to share the infrastructure cost of the proposed Institute on 90:10 basis, he added.
Around 160 kanals (eight hectares) of land have been earmarked at Industrial Estate Ompora, on the outskirts of Srinagar for NIFT which is presently operating from a temporary campus at IT Park Rangreth, the spokesperson said.
The institute offering certificate courses of 6-month duration in Fashion Apparel, Illustration in Design and Studio Photography is being looked after by Director NIFT Kangra, Himachal Pradesh.
The Srinagar centre of NIFT is planning to start regular four-year undergraduate courses in Fashion Design and Fashion Communication from the next academic session from the existing temporary campus at IT Park Rangreth till its permanent campus becomes functional, the spokesperson said. The modalities for making NIFT Srinagar fully functional were worked out during the visit of the Union Secretary Textiles, Dr S K Panda and Joint Secretary (Textiles) and DG NIFT, Navraj Goyal to the State last month, he said.
