Jammu, Oct 13: Call it irony of misfortune, the memorial constructed in honour of the person, who is believed to be the founder of Jammu city is in shambles, courtesy-the lack of concern being exhibited by the authorities concerned.
The commemorative, just a stone's throw away from the Civil Secretariat, was raised in the memory of Raja Jambu Lochan viz a viz the rare view of a lion and goat drinking water together from the same stream which ultimately prompted the king to establish a city on such a blessed land.
Though the memorial was constructed with an honest intention of creating a glimpse of our glorious past but over the years the statues of Raja Jambu Lochan as well as that of the lion and the goat have worn out for want of proper upkeep by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA).
Even the pond created to depict the scene of lion and goat drinking water together is covered with a layer of wild algae, weeds and grass which is ample proof that it was not cleaned for the last several years.
The realistic relief panels depicting slices of life from times of Dogra Rajas, that have put at Jambu Lochan Memorial are also in bad condition due to lack of proper maintenance of the place which has turned it as more of an eye sore than a site of beauty.
"It is next to impossible to even see the large pictures carved on the walls of the memorial that depict different tales of Dogra Heritage because of the tall grass grown over them… the thick layer of grass and bushes have covered the magnificent paintings," an art enthusiast, Ankush Sharma said.
"The height of neglect and stubbornness on part of the authorities concerned to give a face lift to the memorial could be gauged from the fact that they don't even afraid that the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues pass by the memorial as and when the Civil Secretariat functions from Jammu during winters…They just give a damn to the preservation of the memorial and doing nothing in this regard," he added.
