Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 18: More than four months have passed since the state Government came out with the list of officials who were terminated from Government services following their involvement in different corruption cases. However, the follow up action is missing.
It was on July 1 when the Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar while addressing a press conference here made public a list of 63 Government officials terminated from Government services following their involvement in different embezzlements and scams. The list mainly comprised of officials falling in the middle and lower rung with very few top officials included in it.
Akhtar who is also the Government spokesman said that second list of 'corrupt' officials is almost complete and it would be made public as well and that too very soon. Since then more than four and half months have passed but the list is yet to be made public. The delay in making the list public has given an impression that the coalition Government in the state is going soft on 'tainted' and 'corrupt' officials.
"Some of the officials who were all set to be fired from the Government services have managed to get themselves saved from the axe. It is due to this reason only that the second list of corrupt officials has not been made public. In fact some of the corrupt officials have already been reinstated and given plum postings in the Government set up," said sources while sharing views with Early Times.
Sources said that a former Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, a former Director Tourism Kashmir and a former Secretary State Sports Council have managed that their name is dropped from the second list of corrupt officials. These officials who were suspended and attached with General Administration Department (GAD) have since then been reinstated.
"These corrupt officials were all set to be shown exit from the Government services and their name also figured in the first list of corrupt officials. However, they managed to get their names dropped from the list for the reasons best known to the people who compiled the list. Given this experience how can one expect that stern action would be taken against the tainted officials," said sources.
Sources said that delay in making the second list of corrupt officials public has led to an impression that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed led coalition Government in the state is not serious in weeding out 'deadwood' from the system. They said that Government needs to act fast in this regard otherwise the people would be forced to say that many a slip between cup and lip.
"Role of Principal Government Dental College Srinagar, Dr. Riyaz Farooq has already been established in a purchase scam by State Vigilance Organization, but still then no action has been taken against him. The file for sanction of prosecution is gathering dust at GAD and as such this Dr. Riyaz continues to make merry. Given this scenario there are not many chances that the system would be made free from corrupt and tainted officials," said sources.
